Gateway to the east
West Main is the first place a driver enters when heading east into downtown Mesa, and as the city's western gateway, it serves an important role. By immediately showing the kind of diverse culinary offerings and communities Mesa is known for, West Main is not only a world all its own but also serves as the buffer that makes Mesa distinct from the rest of the greater Phoenix area.
Row of brick homes can be found in Mesa's West Main neighborhood.
Spanish influences across eras
While West Main's eateries and shops are predominantly Asian-inspired, most of the area's homes are more Spanish-oriented. The neighborhood has many ramblers and bungalows available in a Spanish style that varies from classical to ultra-modern, and almost always has a small yard dotted with desert flora. But for all the Spanish-style ramblers and bungalows, there are just as many in a midcentury or postmodern design as well. Newly built apartment and condo complexes are also slowly trickling into West Main, offering denser housing communities. Prices in the area have thus risen modestly over the past few years but start around mid-$200,000 for most condos and single-family homes in need of light repairs, while move-in ready homes can usually be found for around mid-$400,000 or above.
Un-pho-gettable roadside tacos
West Main is a major dovetail for Mesa's diverse set of cultures, offering many restaurants, local business and community activities that celebrate many cultures at once. On a morning commute into downtown Mesa, many cars pull into Adrian's #2 for a heaping breakfast burrito. Meanwhile, the neighborhood's centerpiece Mekong Plaza offers a wide array of Asian shops and eateries, such as sit-down options like Unphogettable's beloved Vietnamese spring rolls, or more casual options like kimchi-seasoned Korean corndogs from Two Hands, located across the street. It's also the location for both the Mekong Supermarket and an H Mart location, where locals can go to shop for ingredients to make their own culturally inspired dishes at home. And if an ingredient can't be found at one of those, it can most likely be found at two other grocery stores less than a mile away.

Cultural expos and night markets
Mekong Plaza is also the site of several community events throughout the year, such as the Chinese New Year Food Truck Frenzy that happens every year in late January. Night owls also have a way to meet members of their community during the summertime with the Mesa Asian District Night Market at AZ International Marketplace.
Ice rinks for cooling off
Beating the Arizona heat is easy with so many indoor rec options in West Main, such as a game of 9-ball pool at Main Street Billiards or heart-pumping workouts at the Focus Climbing Center. To really cool off, some hit the rink at the Arizona Made Ice Forum. But on nicer days, locals stay outside and go to places like Beverly Park to sit beneath a cool, shaded ramada as children climb the jungle gym. Others seeking a more reclusive recreation option can take a walk or bike ride along the Tempe Canal Trail, which connects to several other trail systems throughout Mesa and the greater-Phoenix area.

Diverse schools with international baccalaureates
The Mesa Public School district ranks well in its academic performance, with nearly 60,000 students altogether. Young students can start out at Webster Elementary School, which earns a B-minus rating from Niche before moving on to Carson Junior High School, which has a C-plus rating from Niche. Older students can attend Westwood High School, which earns a B-plus ranking from Niche and offers an international baccalaureate program. Furthermore, all three schools receive a score of A from Niche for their diversity, in fact, Westwood is the 22nd most diverse public high school in all of Arizona.
West Main provides shaded bus stops and other forms of public transportation.
Public transit aplenty
Location is one of the hallmarks of West Main. Westwardly adjacent to downtown Mesa, the area offers easy access to other more populated areas via the Red Mountain Freeway, U.S. Highway 60 and the 101. Bus routes also run all throughout the neighborhood, but the greatest asset is two centrally located light rail stations on Main Street, with two additional stops just beyond the neighborhood's east and west ends.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
