Historic area with popular shops and restaurants
Founded in 1848, Mesilla has been home to some of New Mexico’s most significant historic events, including the trial of the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid; today, many of the original adobe buildings are now shops, restaurants and homes around Mesilla Plaza. “It’s a historic landmark with great significance, not just to Mesilla but to the whole Las Cruces area,” says Yvonne Rodriguez, a Realtor with Prosper Real Estate who’s sold homes in Las Cruces since 2001. “Mesilla is threaded in our DNA. We all want to go there to celebrate birthdays or anniversaries, or to take a walk after dinner or lunch. The plaza brings people together — people visiting, people who live in Mesilla and people who live in Las Cruces.” The Basilica of San Albino, a Roman Catholic church established in 1851, anchors the plaza, and its bells still call parishioners to Mass each Sunday.

New Mexican cuisine at La Posta De Mesilla
Mesilla Plaza is surrounded by several blocks of local shops, art galleries and restaurants. Mexican cuisine is highlighted by many local eateries, including La Posta De Mesilla, which was opened in 1939 in an 1840s adobe hacienda that once served as a stagecoach stop. "It’s a favorite, not just for tourists but for everyone who lives in our entire region,” Rodriguez says. “It’s rich in history, and the architecture is breathtaking. There’s nothing else like that in our area. Not to mention all their food is really good and freshly made.”
Andele Restaurant serves New Mexican fare, including tacos al carbon and Mexican-style shrimp cocktail; its dog-friendly sister restaurant, Andele’s Dog House, has many of the same dishes, plus crowd-pleasers like burgers and hot dogs. For an upscale night out, locals head to Double Eagle, a steakhouse set inside an 1849 mansion that’s rumored to be haunted, or to D.H. Lescombes Winery and Bistro, which is known for their large patio, local wines and diverse menu featuring Southwest Meatloaf and Pasta New Mexico.
Many shops and galleries line the streets around Mesilla Plaza, including Bowlin’s Mesilla Book Center and Nambé Mesilla, which specializes in home décor. Residents can also browse local artists and fresh produce at the weekly Old Mesilla Farmers and Crafts Market. Grocery options include FARMesilla on Avenida de Mesilla, as well as Walmart and Albertsons to the neighborhood’s northeast.

Pueblo Revival-style homes near Mesilla Plaza
Mesilla features a range of housing. Pueblo Revival-style and ranch-style homes in Old Mesilla, located in the neighborhood’s center around Mesilla Plaza, sit close together along gridded streets. Homes here were built from the late 1800s through the 1990s, and the variation in age is matched with variations in size, ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet. This desirable location has the highest prices in the neighborhood, and homes here don’t come on the market very often; prices can range from $346,000 to $700,000, with homes closer to Mesilla Plaza costing more.
East of Avenida de Mesilla, 1980s and ‘90s ranch-style homes line shady cul-de-sacs. These typically have between 2,100 and 2,500 square feet and sometimes have amenities like swimming pools and two-car garages that can raise the home’s price. These typically cost between $365,000 to $399,000. The west side of the neighborhood is rural and has few homes scattered among pecan orchards and horse pastures. Homes here don’t come on the market very often, but a four-bedroom hacienda-style home with nearly 4 acres of pecan trees was listed for $1.2 million in 2024.

The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Mesilla Plaza
"There’s always something going on in Mesilla,” Rodriguez says. “It’s a colorful community with culturally inclined activities and festivities like Cinco de Mayo, folklórico dancing and luminarias during the holidays." During the first weekend of May, crowds fill the plaza for the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, a weekend of Mexican food, Mariachi bands and folklórico performances.
The annual Christmas Eve on the Plaza is another popular event that brings out the community. "On Christmas Eve at the plaza, they have luminarias — that’s the little paper sacks with the candles in them — lit all along the Avenida de Mesilla and all throughout the plaza, and some of the adobe homes even have them on top of the houses. They also have carolers in the plaza. It’s just romantic and beautiful,” Rodriguez says.
A stroll around the Old Mesilla Farmers and Craft Market is enjoyable for all.
