Highland Hills
Ranch-style homes lower in price than the DFW Metro area
The neighborhood is mostly made up of ranch-style homes. Built primarily in the 1960s and 70s, homes sit close together, under the cover of trees. Prices for homes can range from $140,000 for a home that needs renovation and reach up to about $285,000 for a completely renovated home. Prices are lower than both the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro Area and the national average. “It’s a little bit of both old Mesquite and new people moving in,” Hudler says. There is a mixture of attached garages in the front of properties and access to detached garages through backyard alleys.Walking distance to Rutherford Elementary School
Students are served by the Mesquite Independent School District. They can begin at Sam Rutherford Elementary School, which is graded a B by Niche. It is within walking distance of Highland Hills. Students can then attend Frank B. Agnew Middle School, which receives a grade of B-minus. Mesquite High School opened in 1901 and has a grade of B from Niche. “There are a lot of programs for kids,” Hudler says. The school has a partnership with local radio station KEOM where students can participate and learn how to run a radio station.Rutherford Recreational Center gym and seasonal aquatic center
Rutherford Recreation Center has an indoor gym with open gym times and scheduled basketball times. The recreation center also has outdoor amenities with two basketball courts and a baseball field. Nearby is City Lake Park, home to a small activity center available for rent as well as the seasonal City Lake Aquatic Center.Smaller shopping centers north and south of Highland Hills
Within the neighborhood is Sunday Morning Catfish and More along with a Planet Fitness. Highland Hills sits between two smaller shopping centers. To the south, Burger Pop Mesquite is a smaller burger joint that sells wings and a lunch special. In the same shopping area is a Tom Thumb. To the north are a variety of businesses, including a laundromat, several restaurants and a gym. Along East Davis Street are more local restaurants, including Oh My Curry and Yia Yia’s House of Gyros Mesquite. For national and regional retailers, there is a Walmart Supercenter and La Michoacana Meat Market about 3 miles away.15 miles to downtown Dallas
Interstate 635 is a partial loop interstate around Dallas and is about 4 miles from the neighborhood. Along with Highway 80, it leads to Downtown Dallas, about 15 miles away. Mesquite itself does not have public transportation, and Highland Hills is predominantly a vehicle-reliant neighborhood. Nearby is Mesquite Metro Airport, a private airport that does not offer passenger flights, but does allow private planes. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is about 35 miles west.Recreation Center seasonal classes and Keep Mesquite Beautiful
Rutherford Recreation Center has seasonal classes and programs for adults and youth, including a Drop and Shop where parents can drop their children off to complete errands. “Mesquite does a good job with events,” says Hudler. “They have a program called Keep Mesquite Beautiful.” Keep Mesquite Beautiful is a non-profit organization that hosts different educational programs throughout the year, including educational classes and days dedicated to recycling or littering.
