“One of the biggest benefits of living in Mettawa is that it feels like you’re miles out into the countryside, and you’re also close to multiple spots for outdoor recreation,” says Julie Morse, a local real estate agent with Christie's International Real Estate. While Mettawa has the atmosphere of a rural community, folks here will find that modern amenities are not hard to come by. “It’s smack dab in the middle of Libertyville and Lake Forest, so locals can easily do their shopping and grab a bite at one of the nearby grocery stores and chain restaurants,” Morse says.

Celebration Farm and the Old School Forest Preserve
Mettawa is a popular locale for equestrians, with multiple training facilities and miles of wooded riding trails. Horse lovers of all ages can take riding lessons at Celebration Farm, which, in the summer months, hosts a horsemanship camp for six to 12-year-olds. Competition-level equestrians can get a membership with Always Faithful Equestrian Club to use the state-of-the-art barns and training facilities. Professional trainers are also available for riders desiring customized training programs for riding and jumping. Old School Forest Preserve is home to 543 acres of woodlands, prairies and ponds that hikers or mountain bikers can explore along the four miles of paved and gravel trails. In August, the preserve is home to a wide variety of blooming wildflowers. Captain Daniel Wright Woods Forest Preserve was named after one of the first settlers of Lake County. Here, anglers try their luck at catching largemouth bass, sunfish and channel catfish at the preserve’s man-made pond. Kayakers and canoers can launch into the serene Des Plaines River from the Wright Woods’ Canoe Launch. Wright Woods connects with the Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway to make for over 30 miles of trails ideal for hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing.
Horse lovers of all ages can take riding lessons at Celebration Farm in Mettawa.

Whole Foods and a Lazy Dog
Commerce is mainly along North Milwaukee Avenue, or State Route 21, which runs north and south along the west side of Mettawa. Chain restaurants, fast and slow, like Shake Shack and Uncle Julio's, ring the Hawthorn Mall. Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar is a popular bar and grill with an outdoor patio. The large mall also has a Target, Whole Foods, Walmart and Best Buy. On the east side of Mettawa near Lake Forest, Oaken Bistro is an upscale wood-paneled restaurant serving traditional American meat and seafood dishes. A branch of Costco is nearby.
Mettawa residents have many grocery options including Whole Foods Market.
The food at Lazy Dog in Mettawa is flavorful and looks great too.

Metra or I-94
