Located in Central New Jersey, the three-square-mile borough of Metuchen is best known for its suburban tranquility, robust downtown area, outstanding public education system and proximity to New York City. “Metuchen just won the 2023 Great American Main Street Award—and with good reason,” says Sherry Tamasco, licensed associate real estate broker at Keller Williams Elite Realtors, a Metuchen native who has sold over 70 properties in the area. “It is a walkable community with a vibrant and historic business district—or as we call it, ‘downtown’—offering great independent shops, international restaurants, arts and entertainment. It’s amazing what we do have in this tiny little town.”

A vibrant downtown recognized with a national award
Metuchen's prestigious Great American Main Street Award was a well-deserved acknowledgment of the community’s revitalization of its downtown commercial district. Main Street is now lined with many successful independent businesses, including more than a dozen popular eateries. These restaurants’ menus are a mosaic of cultural and culinary diversity, from the art-filled creperie of Cafe Paris to the Irish corned beef and shepherd’s pie at Hailey’s Harp & Pub, and from fine dining at the 1843-established Metuchen Inn to tequila tastings at Meximodo. Near the center of town is a Whole Foods Market for any grocery needs, and each Saturday the Metuchen Farmers Market offers fresh foods such as eggs, meat and baked goods. In addition to its own business district, it is less than five miles to two major shopping malls, Woodbridge Center and Menlo Park Mall.
A range of housing styles from Cape Cods to colonials
Metuchen’s suburban streets are lined with Cape Cods, colonials and ranches, many of which date to the early 20th century and which reflect its long and rich history. Modest Cape Cods with two bedrooms and two baths start at about $500,000, while newly constructed colonial homes with as many as five bedrooms can reach upwards of $1.2 million. Condos also make up a small portion of the housing market with two-bedroom units starting at about $350,000.
Metuchen High School ranks as one of the best in the state
Nicknamed “the Brainy Boro” due to its past as a hub of intellectualism and art, Metuchen’s public school system more than lives up to its reputation. “Schools are excellent here,” says Corey Jones, a licensed real estate sales associate at Coldwell Banker. “They’re certainly a factor that draws attention to the town.” Campbell Elementary School receives an A-minus from Niche and gets high marks for its diverse student body. Edgar Middle School rates an A with Niche and boasts a low student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. Metuchen High School merits an A-plus with Niche and has consistently ranked among the top public high schools in the state, with especially high language arts proficiency.
Easy access to the Middlesex Greenway
Metuchen boasts almost a dozen parks or other green spaces. There are six points within the borough where residents can access the Middlesex Greenway, a picturesque 3.5-mile-long paved bike path and hiking trail that connects Metuchen to Woodbridge Township. Oakland Park offers other recreational features which include a baseball field, kids’ play area and tennis courts. Myrtle Park is known for its soccer and baseball fields. “A very popular spot is Thomas Park,” says Tamasco. “This is the home to Tommy's Pond where many come to fish and hang out. It is also home to much sleigh riding in the winter.” Residents also make use of nearby Roosevelt Park in surrounding Edison. The 196-acre green space features everything from tennis courts and ball fields to a skating rink and outdoor amphitheater.
A 40-minute commute into Manhattan
One of Metuchen’s greatest assets is its ease of commutability. Metuchen has its own train station that sits along the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Rail Line. The express train to and from Manhattan takes approximately 40 minutes. The borough is near several major highways including the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 287. Newark Liberty International Airport is just under 20 miles from downtown Metuchen.
