Celebrating Hispanic culture since the 1850s
Since its inception in the 1850s, Allapattah has been characterized by Latin influence. “Hispanic heritage is big there,” says City of Miami District 1 Chief of Staff Damian Jané. “It’s a mix between Dominicans, Cubans and Nicaraguans sprinkled in with other South American nationalities. It has a reputation for being known as the Little Dominican Republic.” This north-central Miami neighborhood of over 44,000 celebrates its past through its architecture, local businesses, museums and seasonal events. It also places many residents conveniently close to commuter services, a sprawling medical campus and two interstates.

"The best pulled-pork sandwiches"
Allapattah’s cultural heritage is perhaps most aptly reflected in the local cuisine. Taquerias, taverns and other eateries appear throughout the neighborhood. Few flaunt their Hispanic influences more proudly than I Am Latin Café, a nearly 30-year-old business known for its Cuban sandwiches and coffee. Cuban-inspired eats are also available at Papo Llega y Pon, which serves “the best pulled pork sandwiches in that area,” per Jané. “They’re Caribbean-style, served on Cuban sandwich bread.” A few blocks southeast, Hometown Barbecue serves classic Southern American barbecue — “slow-roasted brisket, pulled pork, some good cornbread and coleslaw,” Jané says. High-end restaurants include Leku Fish & Garden, which creates croquetas and other traditional Basque dishes from locally sourced ingredients. Leku is housed in the Rubell Museum, which features works by renowned artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Yayoi Kusama. Allapattah’s other artistic showcases include Superblue Miami, where visitors can immerse themselves in light-fueled audiovisual experiences. Day-to-day shopping is available at River Landing Shops & Residences, a mixed-use development along the Miami River to the south. Publix, Hobby Lobby and Ross Dress for Less are a few of the significant retailers operating here.

From riverside condos to Mission Revival houses
River Landing is one of several riverside developments offering condominium living in Allapattah. Condo buyers can expect to spend from around $200,000 for a one-bedroom, 460-square-foot unit to $800,000 for two bedrooms and 850 square feet. Most other homes in the neighborhood are single-family houses. Many feature Mediterranean Revival and Mission Revival designs applied to ranch-style and multistory floor plans. Stucco-sided bungalows are also available. Turnkey detached homes start in the high $300,000s for three-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot properties. Homebuyers might spend in the mid-$500,000s for a four-bedroom build nearing 1,300 square feet. Prices peak at $2 million for four-bedroom houses over 2,700 square feet with private docks on the river.

Holy Week and other annual celebrations
“Allapattah is one of the most religious neighborhoods in Dade County,” Jané says of this heavily Catholic community. A couple of the neighborhood’s larger houses of worship host events coinciding with prominent Christian holidays. Corpus Christi Catholic Church throws an annual Holy Week celebration leading up to Easter, which includes an ornate, colorful parade. Other seasonal events include the local Independence Day celebration, which will be held at Gerry Curtis Park in 2024.
Spacious parks with well-maintained sports facilities
Curtis Park is located in the neighborhood’s southwest section and features a public boat ramp that accesses the Miami River. When the Miami sun is at its strongest, visitors can cool off in its public outdoor pool. Athletes can train and compete on its baseball and football fields, tennis and basketball courts, and a running track. Similar sports facilities are available at Moore Park in the neighborhood’s northeast corner. Jané calls the centrally located Juan Pablo Duarte Park “a hotspot for community events,” including fitness classes and children’s camps. Its facilities include futsal courts and soccer fields.

Metrorail, Metrobus and interstate access
Interstates 95 and 195 run alongside Allapattah to the east and north, respectively. The local Metrorail system stops at several stations along 12th Avenue, taking commuters downtown in about 10 minutes. The neighborhood’s Civic Center station drops passengers at the University of Miami Health System’s massive campus, which includes the nearly 1,600-bed Jackson Memorial Hospital. Bus stops can also be found throughout the neighborhood. Jané says freight vehicles coming to and from the neighborhood’s central industrial zone often cause road stoppages. Drawbridges spanning the river on 17th and 22nd avenues frequently lift for yachts and other boat traffic.

"Crime rates are at all-time lows"
Allapattah has a local reputation for crime, with shootings and other violent incidents occasionally reported in the news. CAP Index gives it a 7 out of 10 Crime Score and places it at higher risk for assault, robbery and motor vehicle theft. However, Jané says “crime rates are at all-time lows” in the neighborhood.
