How Golden Gate’s early residents shaped Coral Gables
Little Golden Gate played a big role in the development of Coral Gables. The historic subdivision can be found on the city's east side, right between its sister community, the Historic Macfarlane Homestead District, and the lush, bayside Coconut Grove neighborhood. Known for its rich Black American history, the enclave’s origins go back more than a century, when the Florida Land Boom brought Bahamian immigrants and Black southerners to George Merrick’s emerging garden city. Drawing on farming and construction techniques from the islands, the original residents of Golden Gate built cottages, planted fruit trees and helped develop the tropical, vibrant Coral Gables we know today.
The neighborhood’s median price, central location, green space and excellent schools make it a sought-after nook, but low inventory and long-term, multigenerational homeownership mean sales are scarce.
The residential streets of Golden Gate are typically quiet outside of school hours.

A look at Golden Gate’s long-held homes and midcentury styles
According to lifelong local Ginger Jochem, owner of Slesnick & Associates, Golden Gate is one of the few neighborhoods with housing under $1 million. The price tag of roughly $835,000 is much lower than the city’s $1.3 million. It’d be a competitive market if homes were listed often, but Jochem says “Nobody’s moving.”
Jochem says this reality isn’t unique to Golden Gate. “The reason is that property values have accelerated so much… In the state of Florida, we have the Save Our Homes [program], meaning that the property taxes in each community cannot go up more than 3% a year for [permanent residences], even if the values jumped 10%. Keeps taxes low, which was the aim of it.” Multigenerational homeownership is a cornerstone of this community, still home to many descendants of the original pioneer families.
There are some early-20th-century cottages and shotgun-style homes, but most homes here are midcentury ranch styles – many updated with carports or garages. While Golden Gate once had many examples of Bahamian architecture, only two Bahamian Vernacular houses remain – neither for sale. Houses sit on modest lots, lining five narrow streets named after U.S. Presidents – Washington, Lincoln, Grant, Madison and Jefferson.
While there is no mandatory homeowners association, residents are welcome to join the Lola B. Walker Homeowners Association, which advocates for the preservation of historic Black neighborhoods. “They’ll go to the city and fight for [improvements],” Jochem says. "It’s a very close-knit community."
Nearby malls and local eats offer plenty of shopping and dining
Daily conveniences are all over U.S. Route 1 and Ponce de Leon Boulevard, from gas stations, grocery stores and fast-food joints to pharmacies, private practices and hospitals. Some local favorites are Chicken Kitchen, a longstanding pioneer of healthy fast-casual dining, and the Foodie Park Miami, a Grand Avenue street-food hub, usually packed with food trucks.
For retail therapy and ritzy restaurants, Golden Gate is a short drive from a few high-end shopping centers, which are:
The Shops at Merrick Park, offers open-air luxury retail with designer brands and refined dining
CocoWalk, with trendy restaurants, nightlife, boutique shopping and leafy Coconut Grove landscaping

Shaded parks and quiet streets support outdoor strolls
Golden Gate’s lush layout makes it easy to enjoy the outdoors. Sidewalks don’t connect every home, but streets tend to be quiet enough for locals to walk to green spaces with ease. William A. Cooper Park and Nellie B. Moore Park, both named for beloved former residents and civic leaders, feature paved trails and pet waste stations under the shade of mature tree canopies, providing scenic greenways through the community.

How residents get around easily in this Miami neighborhood
Right off U.S. Route 1, Golden Gate is ideally located for commuting to Downtown Miami, about 6 miles away. Interstate 95 branches off the highway about 4 miles away. Miami International Airport is just over 5 miles north via SW 42nd Ave. The neighborhood is well-connected to public transportation. From the nearby Douglas Station, transit options include:
Coral Gables Trolley, a free service that runs along Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Grand Avenue
Miami-Dade Metrorail, a rapid transit system serving with stops throughout the urban core
Metrobus, which connects neighborhoods, beaches and suburban areas throughout Miami and southern Broward County
U.S. 1 is busy during rush hour, and the neighborhood’s quieter surrounding streets may get backed up during the school year around drop-off and pick-up time. “Miami is just crowded,” Jochem says. “But the weather’s great.”
Golden Gate residents can grab the Metrorail , Metrobus or city trolley at the Douglas Station.
