Cuban cuisine lives on Calle Ocho
Known to locals as Calle Ocho, Southwest Eighth Street is home to dozens of vibrant Cuban restaurants. Versailles Restaurant has served authentic Cuban cuisine since 1971, offering outdoor seating on its green-checkered patio. La Carreta opened a few years later, gaining fans for its Cuban coffee. Miracle Mile, the shopping district at the heart of Coral Gables, is about a mile south. Many of the restaurants along this palm tree-lined strip offer shady sidewalk seating. Options include everything from fast-casual spots like Panera to new fine-dining restaurants like Motek. Jewelers, salons and more than a dozen bridal shops are packed with shoppers during the day, while modern speakeasy bars such as Copper 29 ensure the energy continues well into the evening. “A lot of people walk around, and there’s always something going on in this city,” says Coral Gables native Ginger Jochem, broker and owner of the Slesnick and Jochem real estate team. “It’s hard to find parking, but a lot of places offer valet.” Publix Super Market is about a block from the neighborhood, with additional locations just south of Miracle Mile. Ponce de Leon Boulevard, which runs through the heart of Coral Gables, includes retail favorites such as Target.Celebrating Hispanic heritage at the Calle Ocho Music Festival
One of Coral Gables’ most popular events is Carnaval on the Mile, a March festival hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana and billed as one of the largest Hispanic Heritage celebrations in the city. The multiday event culminates with the Calle Ocho Music Festival, a massive street party with live music, art and food. Viernes Culturales, or Cultural Fridays, has been celebrated on the third Friday of every month on Calle Ocho for more than 20 years. In downtown Coral Gables, orchestral concerts occur at the Sanctuary of the Arts. Holiday festivities like tree and menorah lighting ceremonies occur right outside City Hall, and the annual Miracle on the Mile holiday parade is a favorite December event. Other events in and around Miami include January’s Art Deco Weekend, February’s Coconut Grove Arts Festival and spring’s Ultra Music Festival.New construction priced above $1 million
Palm trees and tropical foliage peek out from behind the red-tiled roofs of Spanish-style homes and angular duplexes. Neat rows of single-family homes include everything from 1930s cottages to contemporary new construction. “This is what I might consider a transition neighborhood. A lot of old houses have been bought and torn down,” Jochem says. Properties built before 1950 are priced between $650,000 and $1 million, with most million-dollar homes boasting recent interior renovations. Newly constructed four-bedroom homes with sharp, contemporary designs range from $1.3 million to $2.5 million. About half the neighborhood is dedicated to multifamily housing units, making this a popular rental spot. One- and two-bedroom units in the terra cotta-clad Coral Gardens Condominiums are priced between $200,000 and $300,000.Staying cool at the Venetian Pool
Phillips Park, with two tennis courts and a basketball court surrounding a spacious lawn, is one of Coral Gables' most used green spaces. In the summer of 2024, the community voted to move forward with a city-planned renovation that will include an expanded playground, updated courts and a new walking trail. The city has also proposed the addition of a splash pad to complement the nearby Venetian Pool, a historic, spring-fed swimming hole set in a former 1920s casino. In the fall, the sell-out event Paws in the Pool allows residents to bring their dogs for a swim before the pool closes for the season. Lamar Louise Curry Park, named for a late Coral Gables Garden Club member, opened in 2022, its landscaped grounds quickly becoming a tropical escape for the surrounding residential area. Granada Golf Course, the city’s oldest 9-hole course, sits right beside Coral Gables Country Club. “The country club is a big meeting place,” Jochem says. “You’ll see people walking around the golf course for exercise.” Residents are also just 10 miles away from the sandy shores of Miami Beach.Coral Gables High is a certified magnet school
Coral Gables Preparatory Academy, rated A-minus on Niche, serves kindergarten through eighth grade students. B-rated Auburndale Elementary and Ponce de Leon Middle are also options, and Miami-Dade County’s choice enrollment program allows students to apply for any district school. Coral Gables Senior High, rated A-minus, is home to the Academy of Finance, a magnet program focusing on career paths in entrepreneurship, insurance and accounting. Private school options include B-rated Brito Miami Private School, which serves kindergarten through 12th grade, and The Growing Place School, a faith-based and STEAM-focused school for kindergarten through fifth grade.Proximity to Metrobus and Metrorail stops
Residents can easily access Metrobus stations on Douglas Road, the convenient Coral Gables Trolley and the Coconut Grove Metrorail stop. The 4-mile rail trip to downtown Miami takes about 10 minutes. Interstate 95 leads north toward Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale, while the Dolphin Expressway heads west past the Miami International Airport, about 3 miles north.Important to know
Like most of South Florida, Miami is susceptible to hurricane and tropical storm damage. Flooding isn’t common in the Coral Gables area, but flood insurance is still highly recommended. Impact-resistant windows are required for all new builds and renovations.
