Palmetto Estates
A neighborhood full of customized ranchers
With winding roadways, decorative palms and manicured lawns, Palmetto Estates is a haven of suburban living right next to downtown Miami. Most homes are single-story ranch styles, with three to five bedrooms being most common. The area offers many options depending on how much TLC residents are willing to put into a property—from fixer-uppers starting around $250,000 to fully remodeled pool homes or coveted lakefront homes that fetch around $700,000. Two-bedroom condos are also available by the zoo and can sell between $200,000 and $350,000. “This is not a cookie-cutter neighborhood,” Lewis says. “No two homes look alike. Residents enjoy putting their own touches on things, which makes for surprises here and there.”Colonial Drive Park and golfing options
Colonial Drive Park is a popular greenspace that offers sun-shielded slides and jungle gyms, multiple tennis and basketball courts and a large multi-use field perfect for baseball or soccer games. On the neighborhood’s northeastern corner, locals can also make use of Palmetto Golf Course, an 18-hole course sporting a serpentine stream running through the greenery, making it both attractive and challenging for residents and visitors. Younger players and families can also make use of the Palmetto Mini Golf course, also available on the compound.Zoo Miami and Gold Coast Railroad Museum
“Another draw is that Palmetto Estates is close to all the major Miami destinations,” Lewis says. One such destination is Zoo Miami, offering residents and visitors alike a day of fun with more than 2,500 animals representing close to 400 different species that can be seen on foot or on a tram. Just north of the zoo is the Gold Coast Railroad Museum, home to over 40 historic rail cars, including the Presidential Rail Car “Ferdinand Magellan,” which was the President’s personal railcar from 1943 until 1958.Short commutes and magnet schools
Local students can begin their education in the neighborhood at Colonial Drive Elementary School, which earns a B-minus rating from Niche. They can then move on to Richmond Heights Middle School, which earns a C-plus rating, before finishing up at the B-rated Miami Southridge Senior High School. The high school is a popular magnet school, offering students a variety of programs and academies for college or career paths, from game design to criminal justice.Palmetto Estates breakfast options abound
For dining options, many locals often think of the breakfast and lunch options nearby. Walter's Coffee Shop has been serving the community for over 59 years and is especially popular for its breakfast menu. Just up the street, locals can head to Lots of Lox Deli, another popular breakfast and brunch spot that is well-known for its omelets and bagels. Residents can head to Colonial Plaza where there’s a Publix, or drive about a mile west on 152nd Street for the closest Walmart. Additional shopping is found by heading north on the highway, where residents can be at one of the 185 stores in the indoor Dadeland Mall just 6 miles away or enjoy open-air shopping at The Falls 3 miles away.Popular Miami thoroughfares
Palmetto Estates residents are never far from anything in the greater Miami area, with Ronald Reagan Turnpike to the west and U.S. 1, which connects to the Palmetto Expressway to the east, making residents only a 15-mile drive from Brickell and only 30 miles from Key Largo. For trips outside of Florida, Miami International Airport is 19 miles north of the neighborhood. Jackson South Medical Center is just north of the neighborhood for medical care and specializes in a variety of fields, from maternity care to cardiology.
