Shop and dine on Miracle Mile
Calle Ocho, a vibrant corridor at the heart of Little Havana, is lined with enduring Cuban eateries like Versailles Restaurant, which has been open since 1971. El Atlacatl Restaurante is known for its Salvadoran cuisine and lively DJ, while Alba’s Café and Restaurant brings a taste of Honduras to the street. The Home Depot, fast food and small shopping centers with local boutiques, thrift stores and business offices fill out the rest of this commercial corridor. “The Little Havana community is full of nightlife, and there’s always something to do,” says Arlene Davis-Slagle, a Realtor with Realty Home Advisors International and a longtime resident of Miami.Downtown Coral Gables is home to Miracle Mile, a stretch of Coral Way with the city’s largest concentration of shops, restaurants and businesses. The walkable strip includes everything from national chains like Starbucks to upscale dining options like Seasons 52. Irish pubs and modern bars provide a healthy nightlife scene, and the clubs of downtown Miami are about 4 miles away. Downtown Coral Gables also includes retail stores and grocery options such as Marshalls, Winn-Dixie and Publix. For additional groceries, there’s a Sedano’s Supermarket off Calle Ocho.
Calle Ocho Music Festival is an annual tradition
In spring, Carnaval on the Mile lights up the streets of Coral Gables, celebrating Hispanic heritage with live music and food. The event, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, culminates with the Calle Ocho Music Festival, a street party along Southwest Eighth Street. The third Friday of each month brings Viernes Culturales, a festival celebrated since 2000 on Calle Ocho. Downtown Coral Gables also hosts concerts and theatrical performances throughout the year, weekly Friday gallery nights and a Saturday farmers market. Annual Miami events include the spring Ultra Music Festival, about 4 miles away at Bayfront Park.Midcentury homes for under a million
The southern half of the neighborhood is dominated by single-family homes, many of which showcase traditional midcentury ranch styles. Prices for these three-bedroom homes range from $500,000 to $800,000, while larger four-bedroom properties and renovated homes can cost $900,000 to nearly $2 million. “It’s changing,” Rocha says of the area, noting the increasing number of remodels. “I’ve seen new buildings coming up now, even on Calle Ocho.” Newer construction draws on historic Spanish-style architecture or contemporary design, creating an eclectic streetscape. On the neighborhood's north end, sidewalk-lined streets give way to large apartment complexes like Smathers Plaza, making the area especially attractive to renters. Although rare, condo units can hit the market between $200,000 and $300,000. Manufactured homes are available for land lease in the Silver Court Trailer Park.Outdoor exercise stations at Coral Gate Park
Coral Gate Park is at the edge of the Caballero Rivero Woodlawn North cemetery, making it a quiet spot for playdates and pick-up games. A small, shaded playground sits between a grassy baseball field, a tennis court and a basketball court. There’s also an outdoor exercise station. The cemetery serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife, especially birds, which can often be heard from the playground. Other green spaces include Bryan Park, which has three tennis courts and a playground, and Shenandoah Park, a sports hub with space for tennis, baseball and basketball. The Shenandoah Aquatic Facility features a large outdoor pool, and the Shenandoah Branch Library hosts movies and storytime events throughout the year. Golfers can join the Coral Gables Country Club or book tee times on the adjacent 9-hole Granada Golf Course, while sunbathers have a short, 10-mile trip to Miami Beach.Coral Gables Senior High offers an Academy of Finance
Auburndale Elementary, rated B on Niche, serves kindergarten through fifth grade students. After attending B-rated Ponce de Leon Middle, students can enroll in the Academy of Finance magnet program at A-minus-rated Coral Gables Senior High. With choice enrollment available countywide, students can apply to attend any district school. Private options include the B-rated Brito Miami Private School for kindergarten through 12th grade and the Lincoln-Marti Charter School.Metrorail reaches downtown Miami in 10 minutes
Residents can access the Coral Gables Trolley, which runs up and down Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Metrobus stations are available along Calle Ocho and Southwest 27th Avenue. The closest Metrorail stop is Coconut Grove, about 2 miles south, offering commuters a 10-minute commute to downtown Miami. Drivers have access to Interstate 95, which leads north toward Fort Lauderdale. Interstate 395 connects with the Dolphin Expressway, an electronic toll road that skirts past Miami International Airport.Important to know
Hurricanes and tropical storms are possible here, and flood insurance is highly recommended. All new construction and recent renovations must install preparedness features such as impact-resistant windows.
