Community between the palms and the pines
The South Florida town of Miami Lakes was originally developed as prime real estate for growing sugarcane. But while Florida politician Ernest Graham, a lifelong farmer, had agriculture in mind when he bought the land, his sons saw a community between the pines and palms. By the 1950s, the Graham brothers had started a company to develop Miami Lakes, a tropical, master-planned town with a circular layout inspired by the spiral of a conch shell.
Today, the town is home to over 31,000. It’s motto, “Growing Beautifully,” is a nod to the area’s verdant landscape – full of mature palms, oaks and banyans – and family-oriented atmosphere. “It has a great hometown feel, and the schools are top-notch,” says longtime resident Victor Cruz, an experienced Realtor with Miami Home Brokers Realty. “The people that live here have great family values; not only that but they get involved… There are always different events for children or just in general. For example, this year, they had a turkey drive at Optimist Park. Just giving out turkeys.”

Modest midcentury houses and spacious Spanish Revivals
The median price is around $586,000, more than the national average. More than half of current listings are single-family properties, ranging from modest midcentury ranch-style houses in the heart of the city to the spacious Spanish Revivals built on the west side. Low-rise condos and townhouses are more limited in number but still available. The town is popular for its lakeside homes, many featuring private docks. Residents enjoy a tropical climate and take necessary precautions during hurricane season, which runs early June to late August.

Parks and future plans for Miami Lakes Golf Club
“A lot of people think in South Florida, we must go to the beach every day, but that’s not the case,” Cruz says. “Here, you’ll take time to just appreciate nature — at the parks and at home. Where I live, you could drive a half-mile along a straight line of oak trees. It’s like a little forest.” The town features various pocket parks, some popular for dog walks, others are playground areas. There are two main recreational hubs: Miami Lakes Optimist Park and Royal Oaks Park, both hubs for youth sports, offering facilities for baseball, soccer, basketball, flag football, tennis and more. Miami Lakes Golf Club is also popular. The 18-hole course sprawls across 500 acres but is closed until November 2025 for renovation. It’s part of a $110 million redevelopment that’ll also bring new luxury apartments and shops to the area, reemphasizing the course’s landmark status. “Many are looking forward to that,” Cruz says.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Miami-Dade County Public Schools earns an A-minus on Niche. Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High, graded B, is just south of Miami Lakes’s city limits in Hialeah. The school offers several magnet programs, including one in aerospace that will soon be offered within the school’s Space HUB. In partnership with Space Florida Academy, Space HUB will welcome its first class of astronomical students with new classrooms and a rebuilt planetarium in August 2025. Angels Reach Academy is a popular private option for Christian education.
Main Street shopping and dining
Main Street is Miami Lakes’s small, scenic downtown. Trees and stucco storefronts line its brick sidewalks. The strip features a collection of eateries, with flavors hailing from Spain to Nicaragua. During the holidays, lights are strung from each tree and lamppost for the annual Main Street Festival of Lights, a beloved 40-year-old tradition that brings music, sweet treats and holiday cheer to the community. As for day-to-day shopping, shopping plazas can be found along Miami Lakes Drive.
