Middleborough maintains a sense of rustic charm in Plymouth County
Middleborough is a quiet town where winding roads lead past cranberry bogs, verdant pastures and vast conservation areas. “Middleborough is a very nature-oriented place. It’s a Right to Farm town, so you can have horses, chickens, goats and really anything else you want,” says Sue Menard, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has sold several homes in the area. “I have a friend who lives on one of the ponds there, and there are just beautiful sunsets.” The community proudly declares itself the “Cranberry Capital of the World” and is home to the headquarters of Ocean Spray Cranberries, the largest cranberry cooperative in the world.
These vibrant bogs and wildlife reserves surround Middleborough Center , a quaint downtown area with local shops and restaurants. In addition to its natural beauty and village center, Menard adds that Middleborough attracts those looking for comparative affordability in Plymouth County. “It’s great for people who can’t get into those towns closer to the ocean. It’s accessible to Route 44, and it’s only a 15-minute drive to Plymouth or the bridge into Cape Cod,” she says.

Outdoor recreation ranges from community parks to conservation areas
Middleborough Center is home to the town’s Little League complex and several community parks. Standouts include Pierce’s Playground, which has various athletic facilities, an outdoor pool and a play area for kids. Oliver Mill Park sits on the shores of the Nemasket River and hosts the annual Herring Run Festival, where people gather each spring to watch the herring migrate upstream to the nearby Assawompset Pond Complex. There are a few public fishing spots at the pond complex, although there are regulations that restrict the catching of herring.
Outside downtown, Middleborough has several conservation areas where locals can hike or mountain bike through nature, including the Pratt Farm Conservation and Recreation Area and the Rocky Gutter Wildlife Management Area. Golfers are within 10 miles of three public courses: Poquoy Brook Golf Club, Lakeville Country Club and Heritage Hill Golf Course. For those who want to enjoy the beach, Cape Cod is less than a 45-mile drive away.

Local businesses in downtown Middleborough and nearby shopping centers
Middleborough Center is home to downtown Middleborough, which surrounds Main Street and features a mix of historic 19th-century buildings, brick-front shops and restaurants. Residents can browse for vintage goods at spots like Middleboro Antique Co-op before grabbing a bite to eat at family-owned eateries such as Lindo’s Pizza. Other local favorites include Coffee Milano Café and the Charred Oak Tavern, known for its industrial décor and surf and turf. Community spaces like the Middleborough Public Library and The Alley Theatre round out the downtown scene.
Residents can head to Grove Street for more shopping and dining. It runs through the town’s western half and features shopping centers, grocery stores and a wide range of restaurants. Middleborough Crossing has the essentials, with stores like Hannaford, Family Dollar and Aubuchon Hardware. The dining scene ranges from fast-casual chains such as Dunkin’ to local mainstays like Dave’s Diner, which serves all-day breakfast in a retro atmosphere.

Neighborhoods have a suburban feel, while the countryside offers space
The town has a range of housing styles and options, and the price range reflects that variety. “There are neighborhoods with Colonial Revival, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes, but there are also single-family homes with good plots of land,” Menard says. Residential developments offer more of a suburban feel and typically surround Middleborough Center, where the town’s oldest homes date to the late 19th century. Farther from the town center, houses sit on tree-lined lots with up to several acres of land. These properties in the countryside range from traditional Cape Cod-style homes to newer constructions built throughout the 2020s. Prices generally start around $350,000 for smaller ranch-style homes and can climb as high as $950,000 for larger country estates, with the median price for single-family homes being around $590,000. Middleborough also has a handful of townhouse communities where units sell for $330,000 to $440,000. Middleborough Center has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. The rest of the town has an overall score of 2.

Cranberry farming is a big part of Middleborough’s culture, and the town honors its agricultural community with several events. Favorites include the annual Cranberry Harvest Festival, which takes place each fall as the cranberries reach their peak color and flavor at Benson’s Pond. The family-owned bog invites locals to enjoy live music while learning more about the farming process, sampling cranberry-themed treats and venturing into the bright red bogs.
