The cranberry capital of the world
Known as the Cranberry Capital of the World, Middleborough Center is a south Massachusetts neighborhood that is settled nicely into the woodlands surrounding the famous New England cranberry bogs. It is a small town that has slowly expanded since its founding, with older homes concentrated at the center and newer builds branching out into winding subdivisions. But throughout this expansion, the atmosphere of this small New England town has remained inviting. “When you’re in the grocery store or the restaurants, it just feels like home,” says Melissa Atwood, broker with Melissa Atwood Real Estate who has worked in the area for over 30 years. “When we moved here from Plymouth, it was an immediate warmth. You see stands in people’s yards with flowers and eggs for sale here. It’s different from larger cities that way.” Being close to both Boston and to Providence, Rhode Island, is a draw for those who enjoy the bustle of the city but also want a quiet small town retreat to come home to at the end of the day.

20th century homes with modern updates
Many Middleborough homes were built around the turn of the century, with classic colonials standing next to Victorian builds. Midcentury ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and bungalows complete the picture. Houses sit on large lots and often have long paved driveways, with some featuring backyards large enough for in-ground swimming pools. There are a few sidewalks in the subdivisions further from the center of town, with leafy trees towering over the winding suburban streets. Prices for these single-family homes can range from around $320,000 to over $850,000 depending on the number of bedrooms, the size of the property and the build year. Views are also important to residents. “We have a number of homes here that look out on the bogs,” Atwood says. “It feels very special to wake up, have your coffee and be able to see them from your kitchen window.”

Education in Middleborough
The Middleborough Public School district serves just under 3,000 students in the area. Children may begin their education at Mary K. Goode Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche and runs a garden club for students interested in landscape design. They may then proceed to John T. Nichols Middle, which scores a C-plus, before finishing at Middleborough High School, which receives a B-minus and was completed in 2021. The facility features a TV studio and a black box theater, where the Speech and Theatre Workshop puts on its annual “That’s Entertainment” show every spring.

Between Providence and Boston
Middleborough Center sits between Interstate 495 to the south and Route 44 to the north, two major highways for the area. Residents with Patriots tickets will likely take I-495 north 25 miles to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, while Route 44 runs to the coast, which, depending on the traffic, can prove the quickest way to drive to Boston. Those who prefer public transportation can catch the train at Middleborough/Lakeville Station, which makes the trip to South Station in Boston in just over an hour. Logan International Airport is the closest air travel option to the neighborhood at 45 miles, although Rhode Island TG Green International Airport in Providence, which is 46 miles away, is often a quicker drive. “We’re practically equidistant between Providence and Boston,” Atwood says. “It’s great for travel because of the airports, but if you have any medical needs, as well, you can find pretty much anything and everything you need in one of those two cities.”

The herring run and New England's cranberry bogs
Many of Middleborough’s municipal amenities are located on the east side of town. The Middleborough Public Library, the tennis courts, the skatepark and the town pool are all within a few blocks of one another along Jackson Street. The multipurpose Battis Field is capable of hosting youth football and soccer games, as well as vendor and shade tents during the town’s regular fun runs. The Nemasket River, which traces the boundary of Middleborough, is home to one of the largest herring runs on the eastern seaboard, and Assawompset Pond a few miles south is the largest herring spawning area in the state. Recreational anglers are welcome to fish, although strict regulations are imposed on herring catching to protect the ecosystem. Cranberry bogs are central to the area’s identity and are ubiquitous around town. “The bogs are beautiful when you drive down the road and see them,” Atwood says. “It’s very New England. I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s the kind of thing you’d only see when you’re here.”

Drinks and live music at the tavern
The closest grocery store is Hannaford, off Grove Street, one of Middleborough's two main commercial hubs. Aubuchon Hardware is right next door, so residents can grab weekend project supplies and fresh produce in one fell swoop. Center Street is the other main business center of the town, lined with longstanding locally owned businesses like Gregory Scot Jewelers and Egger’s Furniture. Kids ride bikes along the sidewalks, passing restaurants like Honey Dew Donuts and the Charred Oak Tavern on their way to grab snacks at the Stop n Save or pizza at Lindo’s. “I remember years ago, there were vacant buildings downtown,” Atwood says. “Lately, it’s been full of businesses. Harry’s Restaurant has great pizza and everyone is always friendly. Dave’s Diner is a retro vibe and they serve breakfast all day. Lorenzo’s has been around forever, and they have a patio out back with live music. They also have a gazebo for people who want to hear the music but don’t want to be outside.”

The nightlife and history of Plymouth
Taverns and restaurants along Center Street often have live music nights, and harvest festivals in nearby Carver are a quick 10-mile drive east. Folks can catch the train from Middleborough/Lakeville Station and be in downtown Boston within about an hour, although the nearest destination town is only about 15 miles to the east. “We’re just a short way from downtown Plymouth if you crave that kind of thing,” Atwood says. Apart from the historical appeal of visiting the landing spot of the Mayflower, locals can enjoy classes and exhibits at the Plymouth Center for the Arts and haunted history tours through the town when the leaves begin to change in the autumn.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
