Manufacturing and farming meet in Middlefield
Surrounded by thick forests and prosperous farmlands, Middlefield is “Where Industry Meets Agriculture.” This rural Geauga County village is known as the world’s fourth-largest Amish settlement, but it has also been a central hub for manufacturing since the late 1800s. The area’s rich natural resources have long supported rubber, glass, plastic and chemical production, so several major industrial employers for the county have made Middlefield their home. “We’ve always been a hub for industry,” says Debbie Wolff, a village native and Realtor with Siracki Realty. “Which is great because the goal is to have people living here and working here.” The village blends rural and suburban living by varying its neighborhood landscapes, new construction and nearby commercial options.
There are multiple industrial plants in Middlefield, ranging from chemical to dairy production.

Rural living, suburbia and new construction in growing neighborhoods
Middlefield is a rural area at its core, but subdivision layouts majorly impact each neighborhood’s atmosphere. Some areas offer a true country lifestyle among the trees, while others appear more suburban than buyers expect. “It’s really what each person makes of it based on where they’ve come from,” Wolff says. Colonial Revival, ranch-style, new traditional and contemporary single-family homes line wide roads and large grassy lawns. Prices range between $1500,000 and $400,000, with a median of roughly $250,000. Heritage Pointe will be the community’s newest subdivision with over 200 single-family homes. “The village has said they won’t build more than 40 homes a year just because they’re trying to grow with it.” Builders are also finishing construction in Woodsong Meadows, which has had many additions in the past three years.
Despite its rural charm, Middlefield features several modern conveniences, including chain restaurants and grocery stores.

Downtown, Harrington Square and Amish markets anchor local shopping
The village has two main commercial centers. Downtown is at the intersection of state Routes 608 and 87. Pharmacies, auto parts stores and outdoor equipment suppliers blend with cafés, taverns and ice cream shops. The Depot, a 1920s-era soda bar, is a favorite from June to August. “It’s right along the Maple Highlands bike path, so a lot of people stop by the soda counter to get an ice cream cone or drink before continuing on,” Wolff says. Nearby, Harrington Square and the Walmart Supercenter create another retail hub. Parking lots in the area feature hitching posts for the local Amish population, who ride into town to buy and sell goods. Amish-owned businesses and retailers that sell Amish-made goods are sprinkled throughout the community. Rothenbuhler Cheese Chalet, Mary Yoder’s Amish Kitchen and The Amish Country Market are among the most popular.

Middlefield parks offer splash pads, sports courts and disc golf
“If you don’t have a big yard or a farm, there’s still a place to go outside,” Wolff says. Eagle Park is a particular summertime favorite, with its two splash pad areas and large playground. The village has plans to add six pickleball courts beside the park’s picnic shelters. Mineral Lake Park offers basketball and sand volleyball courts, a fishing lake and a skate park. The Yoder Brother Sports Park baseball diamond can be converted into a soccer or flag football field for year-round use. George Knox Park has a nine-hole disc golf course. The Maple Highlands Trail cuts diagonally through the village, accommodating hikers, bikers and horseback riders traveling to and from Chardon.

State routes connect residents to Chardon and Cleveland
State Routes 87 and 608 are core thoroughfares that lead to destinations like Chardon, Cleveland and Lake Erie. “Growing up here, you’re used to driving at least 30 minutes to get someplace. It’s the norm,” Wolff says. While Middlefield is home to the Geauga County Airport, the closest commercial airport is Cleveland Hopkins International Airport roughly 47 miles away. The nearest hospital is UH Geauga Medical Center in Chardon.
Yard sales, pancake breakfasts and hopes for a cheese festival
The Middlefield Chamber of Commerce hosts coffee hours, networking events and holiday gatherings for the community. One of its largest events is the Middlefield Community Yard, Trunk & Craft Sale. Every July, vendors fill Harrington Square, and homeowners host yard sales throughout the community. “Our chamber is also working on bringing back the Swiss Cheese Festival, which hasn’t been around for about 30 years,” Wolff says. “Next Father’s Day weekend (2026) is the plan, hopefully.” In February and March, local farms attract tourists wanting fresh, natural maple syrup. “When it’s maple season, we have so many pancake breakfasts and fish frys,” Wolff says.
