Taking things slow on the cusp of Middleton
Mere blocks from the shores of Lake Mendota lies Orchid Heights, a small Middleton neighborhood on the northeastern edge of town. Nearing the rural Wisconsin farmland that sprawls beyond, this little neighborhood benefits from the peace and quiet of the bordering nature conservation without sacrificing the suburban conveniences a short drive away. It also boasts a variety of home types at a wide range of prices to match, with a mix of townhomes, condos, and single-family homes of all styles that come in at a median price of $320,000. For those who want to send their kids to top-rated Middleton-Cross Plains Schools and experience life at a slower pace just 20 minutes from Downtown Madison, Orchid Heights offers homebuyers precisely that.

A home in most every type, style and price range
Though Orchid Heights has fewer homes than other Middleton neighborhoods, the housing stock is surprisingly diverse. Various multi-family developments sit in the southern part of the neighborhood, most built around the 1970s. Rolling Hills and Concord Heights Condominiums feature two-bedroom, single-level units, while Orchid Heights Townhomes’ two-level homes have three bedrooms each. A few side-by-side duplexes with single-car garages also pop up around the neighborhood. Meanwhile, single-family homes in Orchid Heights include numerous split-level designs, as well as some ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes. A few houses around the neighborhood exhibit Tudor design sensibilities with timber-and-plaster facades. Condos and townhouses start in the mid-$100,000s here, while detached homes can cost upwards of $600,000– especially for homes in the sought-after Northlake subdivision. The average single-family home, however, is more likely to be priced closer to the median of $320,000.
Due to the topography, many split-level homes can be found in Orchid Heights.

Get in touch with nature at Pheasant Branch Conservancy
Orchid Heights Park gives the neighborhood its name and is within a 15-minute walk of even the farthest neighborhood residence, thanks to sidewalks lining most streets. At 14 acres, it’s one of Middleton’s larger city parks, featuring all types of sporting facilities, a playground, a covered shelter with cooking grills and exquisite sunset views to boot. Park visitors can directly access the 3-mile path looping Pheasant Branch Conservancy, a sprawling expanse of Wisconsin wetlands. “It’s got lots of trails for walking, biking and even cross-country skiing during the wintertime,” says local Realtor John Aronica with ERA Real Estate, who lives near the nature preserve. “There’s also a historic hill where Native Americans are buried.” Also part of the conservancy is John C. Bock Community Forest, whose short hiking trail encircles a cluster of oak woods. Or, for those who prefer to get their feet wet, Mendota County Park is just across Century Avenue and offers a boat launch for waterfront access.
