Shorecrest features ample green spaces and a short walk to the water
Six miles from Downtown and a public park away from Lake Mendota, Shorecrest offers housing options below the half-million dollar mark and wide supply of places to go nearby. “The charm of the main drag is special with the coffee shops and live music,” says Realtor Laura Callahan of First Weber Realty. “And you can’t beat the schools; we’ve got one of the top districts in the state right here.” From an active dining and shopping district to excellent educational opportunities to plenty of recreation, Shorecrest’s residents have a lot to like.

A mixture of single-family homes and apartments line Shorecrest's streets
Shorecrest’s northern half comprises single-family homes, while its southern half is largely apartment rentals. A dense grouping of trees bisects these two halves, with street names from the American revolution to the north and street names inspired by Italian cities to the south. Wide, winding roads have sidewalks on both sides and often end in cul-de-sacs to provide a sense of seclusion. Three-bedroom homes on cul-de-sacs range between $400,00 and $600,000, appearing in the split-level and ranch styles. For a two-bedroom townhouse with 1,150 square feet of space, buyers will pay nearly $300,000. While driveways mean residents will always have a place to park, they also require shoveling because Madison averages about 52 inches of snow annually. The spacious lawns and mature trees are a welcome summer sight, though.

Attending class in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District
Students enter the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, beginning at A-gradedNorthside Elementary. “The district is really one of the biggest draws for this area,” said Callahan. “The schools are just fantastic.” Students then move to Kromrey Middle School, which also received an A from Niche. Kromrey was recognized for its work to promote health for students, faculty and family members by providing access to the playground before and after school, promoting stretching breaks during class time and having a cafeteria salad bar. Teens attend Middleton High, graded A-plus by Niche and ranked as the top public school in Madison by the U.S. News and World Report.

Hiking the trails or relaxing by Lake Mendota
There are plenty of recreational opportunities in Shorecrest, beginning at Orchid Heights Park, situated to the west. In the summer, residents can kick off their shoes and play sand volleyball. In the winter, an ice rink operates. The outdoor basketball courts and playgrounds are open year-round, as is the dog park. Just shy of a mile away is John C. Bock Community Forest, a 19-acre green expanse with miles of trails for cycling and hiking enthusiasts. Mendota Park is a great spot to jump into the lake for a swim and offers camping areas. Because Shorecrest isn’t quite on the water’s edge, locals head to Mendota County Park for its waterfront access and dedicated boat launch slip.

Grabbing a drink or groceries in Shorecrest
Enjoying a morning coffee in Shorecrest means stopping into C’s Restaurant & Bakery, a local favorite just outside the neighborhood to the southwest. C’s serves hearty plates of biscuits and gravy but also has baked goods like pecan rolls and homemade scones. Pasqual’s Cantina on Century Avenue has a large selection of Weber Blue Agave tequilas and made-from-scratch Mexican fare. A great way to warm up on a cold Wisconsin night is to head a bit farther west on Century Avenue to Craftsman Table & Tap for one of the giant stacked burgers. Folks can enjoy one of a dozen local beers on tap alongside a plate of cheese curds -- a Wisconsin staple. If a dozen different brews aren’t enough, check out Mid Town Pub’s 100 unique bottled beer choices, located south of Century Avenue on Allen Boulevard. Folks travel down the road to the western location of Willy Street Co-op for an entire cart’s worth of groceries. The store was voted the best health food store in the area by Madison.com in 2023. Stocking up for a party or riding out a winter storm is convenient with Costco, located right off Highway 12. Plenty of retail options are situated off Highway 14, including a Target and Greenway Station.

Navigating Shorecrest
Aside from the Middleton Metro bus service, stops for which are scattered across the southwest end of Shorecrest and beyond, the city has a specialized transportation service for the elderly. A donations-only shuttle service picks up older residents from the Senior Center five days a week. The same is true for shopping needs, which the shuttle meets by taking them to Walgreens, West Towne Mall and the like.
The R Metro bus goes all the way from downtown Madison to Shorecrest and back.
If it's privacy you seek, Shorecrest also has a cul de sac and other homes with more yard space.
