Historic curb appeal and church bells in Highlands
In 1894, Highlands, a Middletown, Ohio, neighborhood less than 2 miles from downtown, had just three homes. Two still stand today, restored to their former Victorian glory along a stretch of road called The Alameda. By the early 1900s, Armco Steel Company's success in Middletown necessitated more housing, and factory workers and their families moved into single-family bungalows on the hill. More development continued for decades. In 2008, neighbors committed to preserving their community's curb appeal formed the Highlands Historic District. Today, the carillon bells can still be heard ringing from the Church of the Ascension tower, where many locals attend service on Sunday mornings, in this neighborhood where some homes look much as they did more than a century ago. "People love feeling connected to history, and that's exactly what makes this neighborhood so special," says Comey & Shepherd Realtor Victoria Torgersen. "There's truly no other place in town where you'll find this level of architectural beauty and craftsmanship."
The tower at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Middletown, Ohio, was constructed in 1964.
The Highlands Historic District was officially approved in 2009.

Most homes within the neighborhood have been updated within the last decade or so, and sale prices range between $115,000 and $330,000. Torgersen, who specializes in selling historic homes, says that Highlands is one of Middletown's most popular neighborhoods "with home values on the rise."

Middletown high schoolers enroll in college classes at Miami University
Highview students live a short drive, sometimes even a walk, away from public school options like Mayfield Elementary School and Highview 6th Grade Center, which earn a C and a C-minus from Niche, respectively. Middletown Middle also has a C-minus grade, and Middletown High, graded a C, gives students the opportunity to earn college credit through the Early College Academy (ECA) at Miami University. "We call it MUMs, for Miami University Middletown," says Cari Hillman, community engagement director at the MidPointe Public Library, which is another educational resource in the city. "MUMs has a presence at events downtown, and it's a very economical option for local families if their kids don't want to go too far from home," she adds.
The student population of Middletown Middle School is 941 and the school serves 7-9.
The AP® participation rate at Middletown High School is 10%.

Neighborhood parks for baseball and community events in Sunset Park
Highlands is home to two public parks, both of which feature playgrounds, picnic tables and space for baseball practice. Gladell Park anchors the community, and there's also Goldman Park to the south. Families can pack blankets and folding chairs for Middletown's "Sounds of Sunset" concert series in the summertime, which is free and hosted in Sunset Park. Other events in the park include Food Truck Fridays and Fall Fest in October, where there's a pie-eating contest, live music and artisan booths.
Gladell Park is approximately 20.8 acres.
Goldman Park is the site of youth baseball and softball leagues and tournaments.

Central Avenue restaurants within walking distance of Highlands
Central Avenue, the neighborhood's northernmost border and gateway into historic downtown Middletown, is lined with a variety of small stores and restaurants. Combs BBQ Central is widely considered to be one of the best barbeque joints in Butler County, and Jeri Lewis, community projects coordinator for the City of Middletown, highlights other Central Avenue favorites like The Broken Barrel and The Cracked Pot. All three restaurants open their patios or front porches for outdoor dining during the warmer months. To the south, Lewis says Milton's Donuts participates in a bit of friendly competition with another local staple, Central Pastry Shop, and there are big box and chain options, including a Save A Lot grocery store in Eastgate Plaza.
Combs BBQ Central opened its doors to Highlands residents in 2014.
Highlands residents head to The Cracked Pot for brunch.
