Family-friendly Midlothian community anchored by Salisbury Country Club
When developer James Kenneth Timmons purchased the 2,000-acre plot that would become Salisbury in 1957, it was rural land 15 miles outside Richmond. But as this upscale neighborhood developed through the end of the 20th century, it gained popularity. "People thought the neighborhood was so far out of the city that no one would ever want to live there – which turned out not to be the case," says Dianne Long, Realtor at Napier Commercial Realtors and neighborhood resident since 1980. "People love to live there."
Today, the neighborhood has about 1,600 homes spread out on large, wooded plots. It's a desirable location for families looking for highly-rated Chesterfield County Schools, houses with spacious floorplans and backyards, and access to Salisbury Country Club. "In its present time, it's turning over. We're seeing parents who have sold their house, and their children who grew up there are moving back into the neighborhood," Long says. "We've got children always running up and down our street."
Colonial revival homes on tree-lined lots
The neighborhood's oldest homes were built in the 1950s, and development continued through the '90s. The neighborhood's growth happened over time; after Timmons purchased the land for Salisbury, he divided the land into several dozen sections and developed one section at a time, Long says. But she estimates that most of the development is complete now. Most homes sell for between $700,000 and $1 million. Colonial Revival homes are the most popular style, with symmetrical brick or freshly painted wood exteriors. Houses often sit on 1-acre lots, and neighbors are separated by towering trees. Some properties overlook Lake Salisbury and Lake Patrick Henry, two private recreational lakes for residents in the neighborhood. Homes sell quickly and don't often go up for sale in Salisbury. "You may have three or four homes for sale at any given time," Long says. "There have been situations where there's nothing on the market in the neighborhood, and people actually go knocking on doors if they want a home there."
Events and recreation at Wishing Well Park and Salisbury Country Club
Wishing Well Park is a popular playground and gathering spot for Salisbury families. "It's all being redone with new equipment. That's a heavy draw," Long says. The park's refurbishment plans include a wheelchair swing, accessible paths, new climbing structures and more. Wishing Well Park also hosts events planned by Salisbury's HOA Social Committee, such as Friday Festivals with food trucks in the spring and fall. The Salisbury Mothers Club and Salisbury Garden Club also hold more neighborhood meetings and events. Perhaps most notably, the Salisbury Mothers Club organizes the holiday luminary tradition: Every Christmas Eve, community members arrange luminaries in their front yards, so thousands of glowing lights line the streets to celebrate the season.
The Salisbury Country Club is another community anchor. This members-only venue opened in 1963 and has a 27-hole golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, and a pool. Members also attend events held on the grounds, including the annual Santa Brunch with kids' activities in the clubhouse and the Summer Party with themed dance parties. "A lot of people that live in Salisbury buy specifically to be near the club," Long says.
For a public golf course, Independent Golf Club is 4 miles down the road from Salisbury Country Club. Just north of Salisbury, Robious Landing Park has over 100 acres of natural space with trails along the James River and waterfront access for canoers, kayakers and anglers.
Well-rated Chesterfield County Public Schools
Students often begin at Bettie Weaver Elementary School, which earns an A-minus from Niche, before progressing to B-plus-rated Midlothian Middle School and A-rated Midlothian High School. The high school has over three dozen student organizations, including symphony club, German club and artificial intelligence club.
Chain stores and local restaurants are a quick drive away
Salisbury is primarily residential, but shopping and dining options are close by. A drive down the Midlothian Turnpike leads to Westchester Commons, which has chain stores like Target and Marshalls, restaurants like Five Guys and Chick-fil-A, and a movie theater. Locals can grab a brew with friends at Triple Crossing Beer or a margarita and quesadilla at Wong's Tacos. Both these restaurants are in Winterfield Crossing and connect to an outdoor pavilion overlooking a small lake.
Commuting to Richmond and walking to the country club
Salisbury is about 15 miles west of downtown Richmond. Commuters can get to downtown Richmond via Robious Road and Powhite Parkway. Virginia state Route 288 takes drivers north to Short Pump Town Center, the area's main shopping mall. Richmond International Airport is 25 miles east and Johnston-Willis Hospital is 5 miles east. Although Salisbury is largely car-dependent, many residents can walk to amenities, including the country club, neighborhood parks, and Salisbury Presbyterian Church and its preschool. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 2, indicating a lower crime risk compared to the national average of 4.
