Community and convenience in Midway

In the Midway borough, residents enjoy a slower pace of life with easy access to shops, restaurants and events in surrounding cities. “We’re close enough to Pittsburgh for when you want activities, but we’re also nice and quiet for when you don’t,” says Karen Bartosh, a lifetime resident of Midway who has served as the borough’s mayor for more than 20 years. Located about 25 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, this small community is surrounded by sparsely developed farmland. But Bartosh says that road updates and the borough’s convenience to Pittsburgh International Airport have led to a changing dynamic among residents. “A lot of younger folks are moving in. We’re kind of a mixture of new people and older folks that have lived here all their lives,” she says. Regardless of age, though, Midway’s residents enjoy trips to Midway Community Park and homemade dinners from local restaurants. With a good school system and easy routes for commuters, Midway offers a comfortable and quiet lifestyle with a touch of rural charm.

Midway’s housing stock is eclectic

Housing options in Midway range in both color and style, giving each property its own unique look. Buyers will find everything from ranch-style homes to compact cottages to updated colonials, and most homes sell between $100,000 and $200,000. “Rental properties also make it easy for those who commute to Pittsburgh, and there’s a lot of development coming in around us as well,” Bartosh says. Some homes feature manicured gardens along the sidewalk, while others have spacious and neat lawns that extend to the street’s edge. On the outskirts of the borough, several renovated farmhouses and empty plots of land provide opportunities for agricultural endeavors and new construction.

Picnic at Midway Community Park

Open from April to October, Midway Community Park features a sprawling playscape with jungle gyms modeled after a helicopter, a tractor, a boat and a firetruck. Teens often meet for a match on the basketball court, while two baseball fields provide space for local games. The park also has a spacious picnic shelter that accommodates birthday parties and weekend barbecues. Just north of the park, a portion of the 29-mile Panhandle Trail meanders beside Railroad Street, offering space for everything from a casual stroll to a long-distance run.

Grab a pie from Knuckleheads

Just off West Dickson Street, Knucklehead’s Pizza and Kramer’s Tavern serve as the local go-to spots for casual pizza dinners or an evening game of pool. Granny and Peepaw’s Ice Corner serves hot breakfast for early risers and is a popular destination for ice cream in summer. Although there is a Dollar General in the borough, “many folks go to Robinson to shop since we’re only about 10 or 15 minutes from Robinson Town Center,” Bartosh says. There’s also a Giant Eagle Supermarket located less than 4 miles away in the neighboring borough of McDonald.

Easy commute to Pittsburgh

According to Mayor Bartosh, Midway is “an easy commute for a lot of places,” including the Pittsburgh International Airport less than 15 miles away. Route 22 and the Southern Beltway toll road are also major routes for commuters working in Pittsburgh, Washington and other nearby cities. Interstates 376 and 79 are also within about 10 miles, making it easy for residents to reach major employment centers across western Pennsylvania and beyond.
