Summer days at the beach
The community's largest draw is its proximity to the sound. On any given day, people stroll by looking for sea glass, shells and more. Residents and visitors can paddleboard when the waters are calm, while anglers set up for a day of fishing. On the south tip of the beach, the Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point is home to a visitor center and an observation deck that overlooks the Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Management Area tidal marsh. A boardwalk with informational signs highlights threatened birds that call this sanctuary home. Wildlife watchers can observe various bird species like ospreys, piping plovers and American oystercatchers, along with sea creatures like crabs and turtles.About 4 miles north, Silver Sands State Park is another protected area with trees, wetlands and wildlife. A long boardwalk passes over waterways dotted with tall cordgrass and leads directly to the beach. Those who prefer to head straight to the beach can park at another lot directly next door.
Farther inland, Meadowside Elementary School features an adjoining playground that is open to the public when school is out of session, along with baseball fields that cater to the Milford Little League. About 3 miles away, Grove Circle Park is another popular green space with a softball field, basketball courts and a playground.
School choice in Milford
The Milford School District serves the community and has an A-minus rating from Niche. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade may attend the B-plus-rated Pumpkin Delight Elementary School. Older students may attend West Shore Middle, which has a B-plus, and Jonathan Law High, rated A-minus. The Milford School District also offers open enrollment for the school choice program, which lets students apply to attend schools outside their neighborhood for educational and recreational purposes. Private institutions of higher learning like the world-renowned Yale University and the University of New Haven are about 15 miles away.Cape Cods, colonials and waterfront homes
The village's quiet residential streets feature an eclectic mix of traditional colonial revivals, Dutch colonials with gambrel roofs and classic Cape Cods. Saltboxes, tiny bungalows and the occasional ranch-style home are scattered in between. Prices can range from the low $200,000s to the low $400,000s, while similar, larger home styles and those closer to the Housatonic River can range from the low $400,000s to the low $600,000s. "The village is more inland, so houses are more affordable for first-time homebuyers," says Veronica Stillings, a local real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. Less than 2 miles away, beachfront communities like Walnut and Wildemere feature a mix of small homes in the same price range and massive beachfront properties on stilts that can sell for as much as $2.5 million. Condominiums are also available, with those farther inland ranging from the high $100,000s to the high $200,000s. Units closer to the beach can range from the low $300,000s to the low $600,000s. Devon's low elevation, proximity to multiple waterways and dense development contribute to higher risk of flooding during heavy rainstorms.Downtown Milford and beachfront events
While local restaurants hold weekly events, Devon residents are also 3 miles from all that Milford offers. The Milford Oyster Festival is one of the city's largest festivals and has been named the best food festival in Connecticut by National Geographic. Thirty thousand oysters harvested in local waterways are available for the event every August. Entertainment options include live music from various genres, over 200 arts and crafts vendors and a beer and wine garden for adults.Along the waterfront, the Walnut Beach Association hosts activities like beach cleanups, Halloween parades and annual Christmas tree lightings with visits from Santa, holiday treats and caroling. Walnut Beach's most popular event is the annual beachfront Sunday Summer Concert Series that runs for six consecutive weeks from the end of July to the last weekend of September, where different genres of music take the stage.
Getting around on Route 1
Milford Campus Bridgeport Hospital is less than 3 miles away, but numerous hospitals are clustered around Devon. "There are a lot of residents in the medical industry that settle down around here," Stillings says. "We have Bridgeport Hospital, the Yale New Haven Hospital and others." Bus routes run along U.S. Route 1, connecting commuters about 3 miles to Downtown Milford and beyond. New York City is about 70 miles south via Interstate 95 or a two-hour train ride on the redline at Milford's Train Station. The Tweed New Haven Airport is about 16 miles north along Interstate 95.Eateries along Bridgeport Avenue
Nearby streets are dotted with small boutiques, fitness studios and beauty salons, while Stop & Shop is about 2 miles east. Every Sunday morning from June to October, the Village of Devon hosts a seasonal farmers market along Bridgeport Avenue. Locals can also attend Downtown Milford's farmers market on Saturdays, and Walnut Beach's farmers market features live music and fresh produce on Thursday evenings. Residents can also head across the Washington Bridge for big box stores like BJ's Wholesale Club, The Home Depot and ShopRite in Stratford. The Connecticut Post Mall, located about 5 miles away, boasts over 100 retailers, restaurants and a movie theater.Beachfront roads give way to small pizza joints, seafood restaurants and the occasional coffee shop. However, most restaurants are scattered along U.S. Route 1, also known as Bridgeport Avenue. "Hair of the Dog is a great local establishment," Stillings says. This neighborhood favorite is known for its casual but lively atmosphere, American fare and brunch classics like eggs Benedict and chicken and waffles. "It's family-friendly, dog-friendly and just a fun place overall. They often have live music, game nights and ladies' nights." Bridge House Restaurant serves lobster and oysters down the road, and Dockside Brewery's waterfront views draw crowds year-round. With its proximity to Valley Yacht Club, "it's the only place right on the river where you can pull your boat up, dock it and have a drink," Stillings says. "In the winter, they have little heated igloos outside that overlook the water, and in the summer, they have games like cornhole outside." Handcrafted brews include IPAs and blondes, while a long menu features burgers, pizza, tacos and more.
Devon's casual dining scene offers a laid-back atmosphere, whereas Downtown Milford's restaurant scene offers higher-end options like Stonebridge Restaurant, where a formal dining room overlooks scenic waterways. "Downtown Milford is a trendy spot with upscale restaurants and shops," Stillings says.
