Millbrook is a rural retreat from nearby Illinois cities
Removed from any city's busy atmosphere, noise and light pollution, Millbrook offers country living with plenty of land and privacy. Farms, rolling hills and valleys with fresh crops make up the area, with a few residential neighborhoods tucked in between. "It's a community where children play outside, and locally sourced goods are readily available at places like The Farmacy Farmstand," says Jill Petranek, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, who has been selling in the area for over a decade. The rural location also means that employers, restaurants and shops are a drive away. Still, the expansive natural outlets and separation from the city make Millbrook a destination for easy-going living.
A mix of housing styles from over 100 years of slow development
Despite its rural roots, Millbrook has no shortage of housing styles. Farmhouses and log-cabin homes are on large stretches of land, with outbuildings, barns and operational farms. American Foursquares, bungalows, Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and split-levels from the early- to mid-1900s are along main streets and winding county roads. The older homes and those with fewer bedrooms range between $260,000 and $475,000. Petranek notes that modern developments include custom-built homes on generously sized parcels in Foxhurst and the Estates of Millbrook. These newer builds sell between $400,000 and $650,000, and plots of land range from $40,000 to $180,000. Median lot sizes exceed an acre, and nearly 90% of residencies are owner-occupied. "Home buyers are pleasantly surprised at the affordability for housing costs and low property taxes in Millbrook," Petranek says.

Large stretches of nature with places to fish, boat and ride horses
Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area, Millhurst Fen Nature Preserve and two forest preserves are all in the neighborhood, filling the undeveloped land around the Fox River. Canoes and kayaks launch from the Shuh Shuh Gah Canoe Launch onto the river, and anglers fish cast a line into the river from its banks. Millbrook Trail Rides offers appointment-only horseback riding through stretches of land around barns and stables. Parks with playgrounds and sports courts are in small nearby cities like Plano and Yorkville.

Gardeners, farmers and landscapers buy and sell local
The Farmacy Farmstand and Winding Creek Nursery & Garden Center Inc. are two stores in Millbrook that highlight the area's rural, scenic and natural elements. "Winding Creek Nursery is well known for landscaping and garden products, including grass seed, bird seed and gift shop treasures," Petranek says. Those starting hobby farms can purchase their seeds and soil there, and greenhouses of plants and rows of ready-to-plant trees are available for those beautifying their yards. The Farmacy Farmstand is a one-woman-owned and operated farmstand with cut flowers, produce and eggs for sale right next to the farm where they were grown. There are no restaurants or traditional retail stores in the area, but Plano, Yorkville and Sandwich are each a 5 to 8-mile drive away with big-box stores, chain restaurants and shopping centers.

The Fox River and its connected streams experience some flooding, but the area's undeveloped stretches of land are the most affected.
Small local events and a large county fair bring Millbrook residents together
City Hall and the fire department host annual Halloween and spring events, including an Easter egg hunt. Residents head outside of the neighborhood for The Sandwich Fair in September. Operating yearly since 1888, the fair is one of the oldest in the state and has "plenty of fun with live music, rides, home-baked goods and more," Petranek says.
