A small community with a rich industrial history
Located on both sides of a millpond running through Middlesex County, the Central Jersey borough of Milltown possesses a unique historical charm that defines this town’s image and lifestyle. Milltown’s unique name tells a story of 200 years of industrial growth, starting with the construction of a gristmill in 1769 and culminating with the presence of a Michelin factory during the 1900s. “The Michelin tire company had a huge effect on Milltown. It was so successful that Michelin started building homes,” says RE/MAX Realtor Mark J. Schmidt, a lifelong resident of central New Jersey, selling homes across the region for nearly two decades. “Michelin definitely left their mark in their area.” With various vintage houses and historic lofts, in addition to recently developed retail establishments, Milltown offers both the charm of a storied small town and the amenities of a growing suburb just off the New Jersey Turnpike.

Housing built for early 20th century industrial workers still stands today
“Michelin built 250 homes in the area for their employees, and all of them are still standing and lived in today,” Schmidt says. Many of the town’s buildings date to the first decades of the 20th century, including single-family homes and scores of bungalows and colonials built as housing for Milltown’s workers. The town’s initial housing plots mix with several ranch styles and colonials from the 1950s through the ’70s. However, several contemporary colonials and bungalows were built in the 21st century. The legacy of industry has also affected shared housing, with the historic Milltown India Rubber Factory being transformed into condominiums. Homes typically cost between $350,000 and $600,000.
