A secluded residential hamlet south of Boston

Columbine Cliffs is a verdant residential hamlet that sits just across the Neponset River from the very south of Boston. “In Columbine Cliffs, you can’t get much closer to Boston. It touches Boston on three sides,” says Mikel DeFrancesco, a broker with William Raveis Real Estate and lifelong area resident. “From certain parts of it, you could hit a golf ball downtown.” While residents are discouraged from actually attempting such a feat, the trip from the wooded streets of Columbine Cliffs into the heart of the city is a quick one, made possible by the trolley that runs between Metro stations on the north side of the neighborhood. Except for a small collection of businesses and restaurants by the river, most of the neighborhood is residential, meaning locals will need to commute for most necessities. However, the relative seclusion beneath the tall, quiet trees adds to the community’s attraction. “The main appeal of it is that you have this nice, bucolic little neighborhood, but it’s within walking distance of shops, restaurants and train lines to the middle of the city,” DeFrancesco adds. “Milton, in general, is a great town, and Columbine Cliffs is just one of the most convenient places in Milton.”

Most of Columbine Cliffs is made up of single-family homes

Most of the neighborhood is made up of residential properties, with single-family homes dominating the overall landscape. “You might call Columbine Cliffs a bedroom community. It’s mostly residential,” DeFrancesco says. “It’s very green, and there are a lot of nice houses – older homes from the early 1900s with a lot of character. There are some Craftsman bungalows and smaller Cape Cods, but there are also a lot of large colonial houses on spacious lots.” Many backyards are big enough to accommodate in-ground swimming pools, and tall pines and oak trees shade the tightly woven residential streets. The median price is around $775,000, which is above the national median. Some homes near the eastern Milton Village begin around $650,000, but many throughout the neighborhood rise above the $1 million threshold.

A riverside atmosphere influences outdoor recreation in Columbine Cliffs

Shields Park, at the heart of the community, is home to a baseball diamond and a small playground. Other nearby green spaces include Governor Hutchinson’s Field and the playground at the local VFW post. “It’s also close to Turner’s Pond, which is a popular spot for fishing,” DeFrancesco says. “People also like to walk their dogs around the trail.” The Neponset River is another nearby source of outdoor recreation. The Neponset Trail traces the flow of the river along the northernmost edge of the neighborhood, leading east to the Milton Boat Ramp.

Commuters have multiple options for heading north to Boston

Interstate 93 is the closest major highway, leading directly into downtown Boston. Commuters who wish to avoid the infamous traffic can take Blue Hill Avenue, a backroad that is often less busy. Public transportation options are also available. “Columbine Cliffs is one of the few areas of Milton where you can walk to public transportation,” DeFrancesco says. “From there, there’s a trolley that heads to Dorchester, and from Dorchester, you can catch the Red Line directly into Boston.”

Restaurants by the river, but grocery and big-box stores in neighboring towns

Columbine Cliffs itself hardly has any commercial footprint, but locals can head next door to Mattapan for groceries and morning coffee at Dunkin. The nearest Target is 4 miles east in Quincy. Most local businesses are concentrated around the crossroads of Eliot Street and Central Avenue, including Steel and Rye, an American restaurant that operates out of a historic garage. Residents can also cross the river into Boston to enjoy drinks at The Bowery Bar on Dorchester Avenue.

Boston is a hub of entertainment and culture

Red line trains make the trip from Columbine Cliffs to downtown Boston in just over 30 minutes, giving residents access to everything from Red Sox games at Fenway Park to concerts at Big Night Live. Historically minded locals can tour the Paul Revere House and the USS Constitution Museum, while others can admire the exhibits at the New England Aquarium. “Boston is the big destination,” DeFrancesco says. “For restaurants, coffee shops, sports or whatever, you’re heading into the city.”
