Bluemound Heights is close to the heart of Milwaukee, letting residents easily enjoy the city.
"It's very convenient where we live."
About 3 miles west of downtown Milwaukee, Bluemound Heights balances locational convenience with ample neighborhood activities and amenities. This community bordering Wauwatosa is home to a public K-12 Montessori school, central green spaces, a yearly neighborhood festival and many locally owned businesses — including a historic custard shop. Twenty-year resident Kim Michels cites its location along Interstate 94 and near the Brewers’ home field as a primary draw. “We can be anywhere in the Milwaukee area in minutes,” says Michels, president of the Bluemound Heights Neighborhood Association. “It’s very convenient where we live.”
Local businesses with "extremely loyal" customer bases
Bluemound Heights is named after Blue Mound Road, a busy artery that runs alongside the neighborhood to the north. This thoroughfare hosts various locally owned eateries and businesses within walking distance of many residents. These include Milwaukee Steakhouse, whose USDA-certified steak cuts include the local-favorite prime rib. A few doors down, Barbiere’s Italian Inn serves classic Italian fare from pizza to pasta to tiramisu — but the garlic bread keeps customers coming back. In the south-central section of the neighborhood, Maxie’s will spice up your evening with Cajun and Creole eats, not to mention $1 oysters every day during happy hour. One of the neighborhood’s longest-running businesses, Gilles Frozen Custard, has satisfied many a sweet tooth since 1938. “We have an extremely loyal customer base that stretches back multiple generations,” says owner Willy Linscott. He recommends that new customers try the Fudge Mellow Mint and Lalapalooza sundaes. Grocery stores near the neighborhood include Pick ‘n Save and Walmart Neighborhood Market, both within ½ mile.
Balistreri's Bluemound Inn is another Milwaukee favorite located in Bluemound Heights.

Bungalows galore, plus condos and other options
Gridded, heavily shaded blocks fill Bluemound Heights, lined mainly with homes from the early to mid-1900s. These average less than 1,200 square feet, significantly smaller than the U.S. norm. Bungalows are the most common, alternating brick and wood-framed structures, jerkinhead roofs and dormers, among other architectural variables. Cape Cods, Colonial Revival houses and brick-and-stone Tudor-style builds also appear in the neighborhood. Multi-family housing includes Honey Creek Condominiums, which offers two- and three-bedroom units. Some have single-level floor plans; others have multi-floor townhouse-style layouts. Properties start in the low $100,000s for houses under 1,000 square feet needing updates. Price tags in the neighborhood peak in the upper $400,000s. At that price, homebuyers might find a three-bedroom, 1,800-square-foot house or a three-bedroom, 2,300-square-foot condo.
MacDowell Montessori School offers an International Baccalaureate program for high schoolers.
Home to a public K-12 Montessori school
Edward A. MacDowell Montessori School sits at the neighborhood’s heart and has a B-minus score from Niche. Over 800 students from kindergarten through 12th grade learn at this public school with hands-on experiences in the Montessori tradition. While students must have previous Montessori experience to enroll up to eighth grade, high school students of all backgrounds can apply to MacDowell Montessori. Those interested in earning college credit through the International Baccalaureate program are especially encouraged to apply. Luther Burbank School operates a few blocks south for elementary and middle school families seeking a more traditional experience. It enrolls about 500 K-8 students and has a C-minus from Niche.
From the sandlot to the big leagues
MacDowell Montessori is close to ample public green space, including Juneau Playfield. This city-run park features six tennis and pickleball courts, two basketball courts and a baseball diamond. More recreation space is available on the block immediately west of the school, with an open lawn and shaded benches. One block east, the Bluemound Heights Community Garden invites locals to hone their green thumbs by sowing, nurturing and harvesting fresh produce. During baseball season, Brewers fans take shuttles from Blue Mound Road bars and restaurants to home games at American Family Field. “That’s something we’ve really enjoyed: walking from our house, jumping on a shuttle and going to baseball games,” Michels says. “My family probably goes to 15 games a year because it’s so convenient to get there. We can actually walk home from the stadium as well.”

A neighborhood association hosting year-round events
The green space next to MacDowell Montessori hosts the Bluemound Heights Neighborhood Association’s annual Community Festival. “It’s our biggest opportunity to have a community event for all the neighbors to get together and have a good time,” Michels says. Attendees can buy food, enter raffles and participate in Yard Game Olympics events like cornhole and giant versions of Jenga and Connect4. The festival is a fundraiser for smaller year-round events like Easter and Halloween celebrations.
