A quiet village in the Garden District
Sitting between Grange and Ramsey Avenues, the aptly named neighborhood of Gra-Ram is among the southernmost members of Milwaukee's famed Garden District. Greenery takes center stage in the tree-laden neighborhood of green thumbs. Flanked to the east by 27th Street's commercial activity, Gra-Ram is nevertheless quiet all the way west to its small nature preserve. This makes it a primarily residential corner of the Garden District, yet Gra-Ram is never too far away from the action and community it helps establish.

Homes accent or compete with the scenery
The neighborhood is a menagerie of midcentury home designs, most of which are ranch-styles. Yet variety is in no short supply. Gra-Ram's quiet streets are winding and shaded by long rows of many different tree species and personalized homes. Some offer modern sleekness with utilitarian designs, while others are more classically suburban with red barnstars and white picket fences. Some utilize a bright color scheme that demands to be admired, while others use stacked stone foundations and other natural materials to blend with their surroundings. In addition to this, renters can find a whole host of duplex apartments that take the form of second-story overhangs. And if that is not enough, the neighborhood even contains some textbook Craftsman designs on select streets. But these factors do make Gra-Ram an above-average place for Milwaukee's home prices, with many selling for between $200,000 to $350,000, sometimes going as high as $500,000.

Multicultural grocery stores

Benny's Cafe offers locals a cozy spot where an Italian-Albanian menu blends with traditional American breakfast items, like their signature Benny's Omelet, which contains all of the fixings of a traditional lamb gyro. In the evening, Corner Club Bar becomes a hotspot of meetups between regulars and first timers alike. What really sets the local commerce apart from other areas however is the wealth of international groceries available nearby, including a location for the San Francisco-based Asian supermarket chain Pacific Produce. Other options include smaller groceries, such as Holy Land Grocery & Bakery for halal, or Maharaja Indian Mart.

Birdwatching trails and garden plots
Next door to the Garland School is Gra-Ram's only green space, Kilmer Park, which houses a baseball diamond, playground, three tennis courts and six basketball hoops. A larger green space can be found roughly a mile away at Copernicus Park, where locals head for hikes around the park's small woodland creek. Those seeking a more reclusive hike can head the opposite direction to find Grootemaat Nature Preserve, whose unassuming hiking trails are a secret delight to local birdwatchers. And, of course, residents love to tend a garden, the mecca for which is the Garden District Community Garden, located roughly 5 miles north of Gra-Ram.

Being a part of Milwakuee's Garden District means locals own a sense of pride for their manicured lawns and community's greenery. Most Garden District events do not happen in the neighborhood however, but are still close-by, including the Garden District Farmer's Market and Garden District Craft Fair, which occur adjacent to Wilson Park. Some events are also religiously-based, which helps further unfold the neighborhood's history. "Many of our parishioners were founding members. Many of their children and grandchildren are still a part of our faith community," says Administrative Assistant for St. Charles Borromeo Parish Deb Barchus.
