Halyard Park
A blend of modern and classic styles
The northern half of the area features a cluster of grassy, spaced-out blocks with a handful of detached houses. Most of these were built from the 1970s onward, including Cape Cods, Colonial-style designs and midcentury-style ramblers with large lots. Smaller centennial homes begin in the mid-$200,000s, while larger, more modern homes can go as high as the mid-$500,000s. “What’s crazy about that is you’re a stone’s throw from the heart of downtown, but you look like you’re in a true suburb,” says VISIT Milwaukee Vice President of Communication and Advocacy Claire Koenig. “There are still a number of original owners in them, and those who aren’t the original owners are probably the kids of the original owners. People just don’t want to give up this real estate.” The southern half of the neighborhood features multi-family housing developments such as condos and townhouses. Smaller condos begin in the mid-$100,000s, growing into the mid-$400,000s as they increase in size, and peaking in the low-$600,000s over 2,000 square feet and a view of the city skyline.New facilities for George Washington Carver Academy
Dr. George Washington Carver, Academy of Mathematics and Science, is east of the neighborhood and teaches kindergarten through eighth-grade students. The school has a D-plus on Niche. Its multiple community partners, including the GE Foundation and City Year, help Carver Academy provide a well-rounded education for its roughly 500 students. The school even has a new, high-tech fabrication lab where kids can express themselves with digital design equipment. A few blocks south, A-minus-rated Golda Meir School’s Upper Campus offers sixth through 12th graders the chance to enroll in their Gifted and Talented Program. At less than half a mile away, both schools are a reasonable walking distance for most students.City-wide views at Kilbourn Reservoir Park
James W. Beckum Park is a 16-acre collection of three baseball fields where the Beckum Stapleton Little League coaches sluggers ages 4 to 16. Formerly the site of a 135-year-old water reservoir, the 35 acres at Kilbourn Reservoir Park offer a picturesque view of Downtown Milwaukee, along with a vast stretch of greenery, a basketball court and playground equipment.Three stories of shopping at The Avenue
Pilcrow Coffee offers an assortment of sweet pastries and flights of assorted cold brew flavors poured into elegant brandy snifters. Mi Casa Su Café serves delicious, Southern-inspired entrees in a casual atmosphere with outdoor seating options. With a food court and three stories of local and global franchises, The Avenue is a local shopping favorite located a mile and a half south. Fresh Thyme Market is a mile east in Milwaukee's Lower East Side.Walkable attractions for sports lovers
The neighborhood enjoys being directly adjacent to major Milwaukee areas like Brewers Hill and Schlitz Park — both bonuses for beer lovers. Sports fans in the neighborhood can also walk a few blocks south to catch a Bucks game at Fiserv Forum or a concert at Miller High Life Theatre.Public transportation with Milwaukee County Transit System
For trips to greater Milwaukee and the cities beyond, Interstate 43 conveniently runs through the northwest corner of the neighborhood. The Milwaukee County Transit System offers public bus lines throughout the city, with stops on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Walnut Street.Important to know
The CAP Index gives Halyard Park an above-average crime score, rating a 6/10 when the national average is 4/10. Violent crime ranks highest in the neighborhood, although local crime statistics show a general downward trend in the city.
