Hampton Heights

Features home styles through the decades
Hampton Heights’ wide, mostly gridded streets —some of which need repair—are lined with trees and sidewalks. Homes in the neighborhood’s western section back up to alleys with detached garages and sheds, while residents living east of the Lincoln Creek waterway enjoy larger, more spaced out and verdant lots. Ranch-style homes from the mid-to-late 20th century predominate here — many with smaller, linear floor plans and aluminum siding in the post-World War II style. Older homes in the neighborhood range from 1920s bungalows and ‘30s Tudors to 1950s Cape Cods. List prices in the community run from $52,000 to $287,000. For a completely remodeled, three-bedroom bungalow with about 1,200 square feet, the buyer would pay around $200,000. However, a two-bedroom ranch-style home just over 1,100 square feet will run less than $100,000, though that often means fewer recent updates.
Take the bus or highway to downtown Milwaukee
Wisconsin Highway 45 (also known as the Fond du Lac Freeway) cuts through the western portion of the neighborhood. Residents have a 10-mile drive to downtown Milwaukee. Hampton Heights has several bus stops provided by the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTC). General Mitchell International Airport is a 16-mile drive via I-43 South.
High school offers advanced placement classes
Students can walk to Hampton Elementary School, which has a C-minus grade from Niche. Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented focuses on STEM and college preparation and has a C-minus grade from Niche. Milwaukee High School of the Arts offers advanced placement classes in several areas and has a C-plus grade.Locals can enjoy burgers and pizza nearby
For groceries, residents can go to Foodtown supermarket. Hampton Heights has several eateries that are considered local favorites, including Hup’s Pizza. This decades-old establishment only accepts cash and is hard to miss; it’s the red-and-green shack alongside Hampton Avenue. Just a couple blocks down from Hup’s is Express Gyro, which serves everything from burgers to hot dogs to sandwiches and, of course, gyros. They also sell milkshakes and malts.Residents plant their own gardens
The 12-acre Harriet Tubman Park sits along Hampton Avenue, offering multi-use fields, a wading pool and two basketball courts. Residents who like to grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables can get involved with Milwaukee Grows Garden Network to start their own plots. The network is maintained by residents who want to develop unused space in the neighborhood. In Hampton Heights, locals can visit the Garden of Delight, situated right next to Lincoln Creek. “If you drive a bit further to downtown Milwaukee, there’s so much to do, like the Museum of Art,” Veng says. Residents can also travel 11 miles via West Hampton Avenue to the shore at McKinley Beach.
