Suburban living close to downtown
Less dense than other Southwest Side neighborhoods yet no less convenient, Hawley Farms is a Milwaukee suburb with delightfully easy access to schools, parks and small businesses. Other than an apartment complex in the neighborhood's northern end, Hayley Farms comprises predominantly single-family homes with tree-lined yards. Driveways lead to private, detached garages and yards big enough for an above-ground pool or swing set. Many residents take advantage of the well-maintained sidewalks on the planned roads for a casual stroll or jog. Houses on the neighborhood's perimeter can expect more noise and less privacy, as the Hawley Farms is bordered by intersecting main streets.

Ranches from a major housing boom
Because of a growing need for houses close to Milwaukee, Hawley Farms and surrounding neighborhoods experienced a significant housing boom in the 1950s. Many of the houses from then are traditional ranches. Although rare, the occasional Cape Cod or bungalow exists in the neighborhood, adding a little variety to the otherwise uniform streets. Homes range from $175,000 for a fixer-upper to $300,000 for a recently renovated property. House sizes don't vary significantly, although some slightly larger homes with more generous yards can be found on the higher end of the scale. Because of their friendly prices and accessibility to the surrounding Milwaukee area, houses in Hawley Farms sell incredibly fast, lasting only a week on the market, on average. “There is such a lack of inventory all over Milwaukee,” says Dawn Kamalian, a real estate agent at Shorewest Realtors. “It’s driving prices up, especially in these more sought-after suburban neighborhoods.”

Walk to all levels of schooling
Students of all levels can walk to school from Hawley Farms. The neighboring town of Wedgewood is home to Honey Creek Elementary and Wedgewood Park International Middle School, rated a C-plus and C-minus by Niche.com. Though the schools don't rank highly, they are on par with the Milwaukee Public Schools District. Wedgewood Park is the first middle school in Milwaukee to offer the IB Programme. Hamilton High School rounds out the bunch and is also a short walk for most students. The school is rated a C and "hosts frequent adult learning programs through Milwaukee Recreation," says local real estate agent Tricia Chartier, who's taken candle-making classes there with her sister-in-law. "They've got sewing classes, soap making and lots of crafts," she added.

Getting outside and staying active near Hayley Farms
East of the neighborhood is Lyons Park, a 12-acre green space with densely forested, shaded walking paths passing over a small creek. Dog walkers are common at the park, and families with young children utilize the small playground and splash pad in the summer months. A short drive will take residents to McCarty Park and its athletic amenities. A baseball field, tennis courts and a public swimming pool are busy with locals looking to exercise outside, and the McCarty Park Pond is excellent for those looking for relaxed fishing or duck feeding.

Groceries and a pharmacy are just at the corner
Because it is highly residential, very little exists in the way of shopping or dining in Hawley Farms. One nearby store, however, is American Science & Surplus. This warehouse-sized curio collection features special-interest items and collectibles scattered among housewares and school supplies. It's a perfect spot for hobbyists, kids and those looking to waste time browsing the isles. Crispy and Grill is a neighborhood joint that doles out perfectly goldened chicken, fish and fries by the bucketful in a simple atmosphere. With Aldi, a gas station and a Walgreens right at the neighborhood's corner, residents only need to travel a block to gas up, grab groceries or refill prescriptions. Walmart, Target and familiar fast-food restaurants are a short drive away, northeast of the neighborhood.

20 minutes from downtown
A major draw of Hawley Farms to homebuyers is its proximity to downtown Milwaukee. The neighborhood is removed away enough to provide more space and quiet than other areas while remaining close for getting downtown in a breeze. Commuters can expect to get downtown in under 20 minutes by car or take one of the buses surrounding the town. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport and a few major hospitals are only 15 minutes away.
