Saying that a neighborhood in a big city like Milwaukee offers "small-town vibes" might come off as insincere. But Hawthorne Glen boasts a diverse array of restaurants, shops, an old-school movie house and a bowling alley — all between two stoplights on Vliet Street. Walking a block from home to any local hotspot, it's virtually impossible for neighbors not to run into each other. How's that for small-town style? What makes Hawthorne Glen mighty is that it's home to an immersive outdoor education center that's just a walk from residences. Though locals have a hefty dose of fun and convenience at home, they might head just over a mile west to Wauwatosa, a big city by comparison, when they're itching for more.

Food and fun on Vliet Street
Vliet Street makes a whole day's worth of eating, shopping and fun possible. Locals might start the day at Valentine Coffee Roasters, which serves baked goods alongside original coffee blends sweetened by in-house syrups. For lunch and dinner, Wy'east Pizza serves a selection of pies made from fermented dough, including a vegan option. The Neighborhood Draft has 21 craft beers on tap, made-from-scratch chicken wings and other American foods. Finally, it'd be easy to close out an evening with a glass of wine at Charles E. Fromage, an intimate bistro, or with something sweeter, like the Hot Buttered Rum cocktail. Retail shops on Vliet include Rainbow Booksellers, a locally owned children's bookstore; Barcelona MKE, an art gallery and antique shop; and Spruced57, a women's consignment store.

Walking through a Winter Wonder Woods
Being near Wauwatosa grants access to its five shopping districts, including The Village, a European-feeling downtown square with niche local businesses within romantic stone buildings. A favorite local store is The Little Read Book – a casual bookstore that creates the ideal cozy environment for perusing. Come September, The Village is the site of TosaFest, an annual street festival packed with live music and vendors. Residents also have home-grown festivities to look forward to, including Winter Wonder Woods, when its anchoring namesake green space comes alive with holiday lights each December.

Quaint Cape Cods
Hawthorne Glen's four blocks house fewer than 300 people, making it one of the smallest neighborhoods in Milwaukee. The residential section occupies a small, tree-filled bluff overlooking the neighborhood's dedicated green space, the Hawthorne Glen Outdoor Education Center. Bungalows comprise virtually all single-family homes, some with jerkinhead roofs, others with Cape Cod-like, forward-sloping roofs and dormers. Most homes settle between the $100,000 to $200,000 dollar range though a few in the $300,000 range punctuate the housing stock. That higher range might fetch four bedrooms, over 2,000 square feet, and a completely remodeled interior that’s highly modern, nicely juxtaposing the typical mid-century frame.
Some double-story homes in Hawthorn Glen are larger, with front porches.

Programs for kids at the Outdoor Education Center
"Hawthorne Glen is truly a hidden gem in the city of Milwaukee," says Nicole Sponhotlz, Manager of Citywide Programs for Milwaukee Recreation. The park's 25-acre Outdoor Education Center is within walking distance of the neighborhood, with an access point off McKinley Avenue. Operated by Milwaukee Recreation, this heavily forested expanse is a field trip destination for thousands of students annually. However, the public is free to enjoy the Glen's soccer field, playgrounds and nature trails. Additionally, seasonal programming is also available at the Glen such as the Friday Night Tales for Tots, hiking courses, youth summer camps and more. A unique aspect of the Hawthorne Glen is the Little Nature Museum, which is open an hour a day and free for all to visit, with live snakes, turtles and other native animals. "It's open for an hour every day — it's free to come on in and visit our education ambassador animals," says naturalist Anne Duffy. For indoor recreation, locals bow at Vliet Street's Highland Lanes. A block west is the Times Cinema, a Milwaukee go-to since 1935, showcasing classics like Johnny Depp's "Cry Baby."
Quick trips to downtown Milwaukee
Grocery stores from Metcalfe's Market, Metro Market and Outpost Natural Foods are all in Wauwatosa, just over a mile away. The neighborhood is also considerably close to Interstate 94, making commutes to downtown Milwaukee quicker. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is around 13 mile southeast when flights are needed. A medical complex with Froedtert Hospital, Children's Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin is just over 3 miles west for both educational opportunities and care. Froedtert Hospital is a 735-bed level 1 trauma center.
