City amenities without the busy lifestyle
Sometimes, a neighborhood stands out not for its flashy homes or swanky dining scene but for its stability and simplicity. Highwood Estates is one of those Milwaukee neighborhoods – perfectly square, peacefully uneventful and classically suburban. Being on the far southwest side of Milwaukee and bordered by the city of West Allis, Highwood Estates offers the best of both worlds. The area is away from the bustle and more spacious than neighborhoods closer to downtown, but with nearby highways in every direction for quick commutes to Lake Michigan and the city's center. "The neighborhood is good for families, and I see a lot of kids around there,” says Wajiha Ahmad, Realtor with Premier Point Realty LLC., who has been selling homes in Milwaukee for the past 5 years. Students have their choice of schools through Milwaukee's public school district, and West Allis's growing shopping and dining areas are within a 10-minute drive.

Where houses aren’t too big or too small
Multi-family buildings and apartment complexes are along the exterior streets of the square neighborhood, but Highwood Estates is otherwise home to single-family houses from the middle of the 20th century. Ranch-style homes are the predominant type, with two to three bedrooms and detached garages. "Highwood Estates is a good spot for first-time homebuyers," Ahmad says. "The houses aren't too big or too small – they're a perfect size for a growing family." Houses range from $200,000 to $380,000, with a median price of $277,000. Some two-story Colonial Revivals are scattered around the blocks, falling within the same price range. Multi-family homes have two, three or four units and sell between $300,000 and $480,000. Lots are mostly uniform in shape and size, with short front yards and square backyards with enough space for a patio or garden. "Most properties are well kept, and owners tend to keep up with mowing their lawns and maintaining their homes," Ahmad says. Though the yards are less than one-fifth an acre large, they offer more space than most neighborhoods closer to downtown Milwaukee. Still, the houses are no more expensive than the Milwaukee Metro average.

A choice in educational paths
Students enrolled in Milwaukee Public Schools can choose to attend any district school with room for the incoming school year. Many families choose to send their students to nearby schools since the city does not always provide transportation. Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School teaches prekindergarten through fifth grade and is rated a C-minus by Niche. Honey Creek Elementary is a nearby traditional neighborhood school, rated a C. For middle school, students can choose C-minus-rated Wedgewood Park International School. The school was the first middle school in Wisconsin to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Hamilton High School is rated a C and offers specialized career paths through Project Lead the Way. Students can explore potential job paths through internships, volunteering and JROTC. One of the school's most unique features is its student-run credit union.

Fast-food chains, a Dollar Tree and CVS Pharmacy are at the intersection of South 76th Street and West Oklahoma Avenue, but the area's most extensive shopping is less than 3 miles away on South 108th Street. Shopping centers there have grocery stores, department stores, national chains and home improvement centers.

Surrounded by highways for a short commute
Buses stop along two of the neighborhood's bordering streets, but most residents rely on their cars. Highwood Estates sees little through traffic, and the streets are in good condition with minimal cracks, potholes or uneven areas. Sidewalks are along every street, usually free of parked cars. Commuters can get to downtown Milwaukee, 12 miles away along either Interstates 41 and 94 or Interstates 43 and 94. Aurora West Allis Medical Center is less than 2 miles north and is one of the largest employers of West Allis and the city's bordering neighborhoods.
A favorite pastime of the city
AMF West Lanes is a hot spot for entertainment on rainy or snowy days. The nearby bowling alley offers nightly specials for unlimited bowling, food deals and party options. Due in part to Milwaukee's large German population in the late 1800s, the city was a hub for bowling, or tenpins, as it was called. The tradition earned Milwaukee the nickname "America's Bowling Capital." While the game has changed and professional participation has dwindled, the tradition of bowling for entertainment is still strong today.
