Old and new meet in this Milwaukee community
About a mile and a half southwest of downtown Milwaukee is Historic Mitchell Street, a densely populated neighborhood that offers glimpses of the city’s history: St. Stanislaus Oratory, America’s first Polish church; the old Schuster’s department store building, now a growing indoor mall and apartment complex; and the long-vacant Modjeska Theater. But there are signs of the neighborhood’s evolution; what was once a community comprised mainly of Polish immigrants is now a melting pot. “I think people don’t realize how diverse it is,” says Chanell Royston, a real estate agent with Mahler Sotheby's International Realty and Milwaukee native who sells throughout the city. “I think it’s one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in the city.” Historic Mitchell Street’s location is also a draw. “The proximity to the highway is big because a lot of residents use to take to go to work in the suburbs. Plus, you have access to downtown and the lake,” Royston says.

Bungalows and Tudors are standard
Historic Mitchell Street’s earliest residents hung their hats in simple, wood-framed duplexes, many of which still stand today. More complex designs from the turn of the 20th century also stand over the gridded, tree-dotted streets. These include bungalows, some in the classic Milwaukee style; brick Tudors, from quaint cottages to larger, more complex constructions; and some Victorian designs. Front lawns are small but manicured. Mature trees dot the streets. Sidewalks are abundant throughout the neighborhood, allowing residents to walk to schools, parks, shops and restaurants. Prices range from $75,000 for fixer-uppers to $200,000 for three- or four-bedroom homes with full renovations. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10, a few points higher than the national average of 4. In July 2023, the Milwaukee Police Department launched Operation Summer Guardian, which increased police presence in 27 neighborhoods, including Historic Mitchell Street.
