Busy neighborhood with schools and restaurants
In Honey Creek Parkway, parents walk with their kids past wooden fences and modest homes for drop-off at the local private schools. This tiny neighborhood between Interstate 94 Blue Mound Road is an urban residential area where people hop on the highway to get to their offices downtown. Highway noise can get loud, and traffic can get busy during the state fair over the summers. “The great thing about it is, it’s the city of Milwaukee, but it’s close to Wauwatosa, so it gives you the feeling of the Wauwatosa area,” says Bonnie Dominski of J&J Custom Real Estate in Greendale.

Walking to private schools
Many families living in Honey Creek Parkway send their kids to one of the nearby private schools, says Dominski. St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic School, affiliated with the next-door church of the same name, serves kindergarten through eighth grades, and Pius XI High School serves grades 9-12. Wisconsin Lutheran High School has an A-rating from Niche. The walkability factor is a plus for the area, says Dominski. “It’s a terrific area. Everyone who lives there loves the location,” she says. Public schools serving the area include Burbank Elementary School for prekindergarten through eighth grade and MacDowell Montessori School for prekindergarten through high school. Burbank is rated C-minus by Niche, and MacDowell has a rating of B-minus.

Wisconsin's first frozen custard stand
Honey Creek Parkway may be small, but its culinary offerings have made it notorious. Gilles Frozen Custard, one of Milwaukee’s best-known frozen dessert stands, sits within the neighborhood. Established in 1938, Gilles is Wisconsin’s oldest frozen custard stand. Burgers, sandwiches, cheese curds and shakes are on the menu, and special custard flavors change almost daily. “My mother and father met here. Heck, I took my first steps here,” says Gilles owner Willy Linscott. “It is an honor to hear our customers that return from out of town exclaim that Gilles has to be a stop. To some, we are the first and last stop before the airport. Seriously.” Speaking of the airport, yes, the neighborhood sits 15 minutes from Waukesha County Airport. But noise is not a problem, says Dominski. “The planes fly in a different direction, so it’s great,” she says. Also in Honey Creek Parkway is Blue’s Egg, a popular brunch spot serving pastries like Nutella-stuffed banana muffins and plates like eggs Benedict and corned beef hash.
