A quiet suburbia in northwestern Milwaukee
Located between Fond du Lac Freeway and Appleton Avenue, Long View is a northwestern Milwaukee community where busy streets mean easy access to shopping, dining and downtown entertainment. Despite the activity, the neighborhood has a family-friendly atmosphere. “It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood,” says She’reah Fox, director of All Smiles Creative Learning Center, a local daycare. “You feel safe—you don’t see a lot of crime.” These factors and relatively low real estate prices combine to draw families and professionals looking for a home base outside the city.
Midcentury designs on a grid layout
Most blocks are residential, with winding streets west of 76th and a gridded pattern to the east. Neatly-maintained sidewalks pass eighth-acre lots and single-car garages. Mature oak and maple trees drape shadows across well-worn streets and asphalt driveways. Homes largely follow midcentury designs, with a few outliers thrown in. “There are a lot of Cape Cods, some bungalows and Tudor properties,” says Melina Cortes of Root River Realty Group. “You’ll also find long rows of duplexes, mainly with single-level units stacked on top of each other.” Home prices average in the $170,000s, well below Milwaukee's average of $290,000. Smaller homes needing maintenance or renovation can start as low as the mid-$50,000s before increasing into the mid-$100,000s as they gain square footage and modern updates. The highest-priced homes can reach the low $200,000s and generally have corner lots, roomy interiors and brick exteriors.
Walk to one of two elementary schools
Residents west of 76th Street are less than a mile from Grantosa Drive School, which teaches prekindergarten through eighth-grade students and has a D-plus on Niche. Just east of the Fond du Lac Freeway, Lancaster School is less than a mile from the eastern side of Long View and has prekindergarten through eighth-grade students and a C-minus Niche rating. High school students attend James Madison Academic Campus, which has a C-minus and offers a variety of specialty courses, from finance to firefighting.
Little League at Indigenous Peoples’ Park
At just under 12 acres in size, Vogel Park has three multi-use fields, each equipped with a backstop for pick-up baseball games. Just south in Columbus Park, Indigenous Peoples’ Park features three full baseball fields, which are popular spots for seasonal Little League games. Kids take advantage of the splash pad in the summer and ride their sleds down the sledding hill when it snows. Madison Park fills nearly 60 acres with a nine-hole disc golf course, tennis and basketball courts, a soccer field and four more baseball and softball diamonds.
Laotian cuisine at An Ox Café
Established in 2022, An Ox Café serves comforting Lao and Thai dishes and offers patio seating with a full cocktail bar. As its title suggests, 76 Steak and Potato specializes in casual, no-frills dining, including fried catfish, wings and T-bone steak. Chain restaurants and grocery stores like Save A Lot and Foodtown cluster along West Hampton Avenue. Various clothing stores, banks and other services operate at Midtown Center in the neighboring community of Capitol Heights.
Celebrations in the City of Festivals
Milwaukee's sheer number of annual events and celebrations has earned it the nickname “City of Festivals.” Residents in Long View are 10 miles from festivities, including Milwaukee Oktoberfest, the SnowGlobe Holiday Festival and the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival.
Easy access to major highways
The Milwaukee County Transit System offers regular bus services with stops on Hampton Avenue and North 76th Street. The major highways on Fond du Lac Freeway and Appleton Avenue give access to Downtown Milwaukee, 10 miles southeast. The Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is just under 14 miles southeast, while the Froedtert Hospital is 6 miles south in Wauwatosa.
Important to know
Though the CAP Crime Index measures Long View at the national average of four out of 10, its violent crime incidents reach a six rating.
