Just west of Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

Maitland Park is a neighborhood for people who like to stay within minutes of their doorstep and for those who enjoy jetting off to parts unknown at a moment’s notice. “It’s literally in the center of everything. You’re seconds off the freeway, and you’re right next to the airport, probably two minutes away from baggage claim,” says Realtor Evan Dittmar, who sells homes in the area with Epique Realty. The Milwaukee suburb also has a park and an acclaimed high school nearby. “It’s just an all-around awesome little area,” Dittmar adds.

Ranch styles and split levels

Maitland Park occupies a half-residential, half-industrial stretch of Milwaukee’s South Side, with Interstate 41 to the west and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport to the east. The streets are lined with trees and sidewalks, and the terrain is relatively flat. Its 1,000-plus residents live in three small clusters of single-family homes. The first cluster is south of the park, the second is north of the park and the third is north of the Airport Spur Freeway. The homes were built in the 1960s, so the neighborhood mainly includes mid-20th-century ranch styles with linear layouts and either brick or wood exteriors. There are also several split levels with large front porches. The homes have private driveways leading to attached or detached garages. Prices range from $240,000 to $375,000. "I think a lot of people who move in are planning to live there a long time, but a lot of these homes are starter homes for buyers," says Realtor Alan Alteri, who sells houses in the area with Shorewest Realtors. The neighborhood also has multiple apartment complexes.

The Maitland Park green space and the Wilson Premier Youth Baseball fields

The neighborhood gets its name from Maitland Park, a 27-acre green space dividing the residential sections. The lightly babbling Oak Creek runs through the center of this park, flanked by open fields, walking paths and a playground. Residents in the northern section can cross Grange Avenue to reach the Wilson Premier Youth Baseball fields, which date back over 60 years and welcome sluggers aged 5 to 16 to compete on its three diamonds. Cudahy Nature Preserve is just over a mile southeast of the neighborhood. The 42-acre old-growth forest has species like red oak, sugar maple and American basswood. Visitors walk its mile-long loop trail.
