North Division
Centennial bungalows and American Foursquares
Sidewalks connect the neighborhood, passing covered front porches and yards enclosed with chain-link fences. Street names like Teutonia Avenue point toward the earliest years of the area's German heritage. Land goes for a premium this close to the city's main drag, so front and back yards are minimal, rarely requiring extensive upkeep outside of corner lots. Most homes in the area are bungalows and American Foursquares, with a median construction date of 1900. As a result, extensive renovation may be required before an official move-in date can be set. The least expensive homes are often tax foreclosures, falling between the low $5,000s and the mid-$18,000s. Single-story bungalows begin in the mid-$30,000s and peak in the mid-$100,000s with improved maintenance and amenities like bonus rooms. American Foursquare models start in the low $40,000s and reach the high $100,000s depending on condition and size.Follow in the footsteps of Golda Meir
Students begin their education at Hopkins Lloyd Community School, which serves prekindergarten through eighth grade and has a C-minus on Niche. Students attending North Division High School will follow in the footsteps of Golda Meir, former Israeli prime minister and NDHS alum who lived in the area during a boom of Jewish immigration in the early days of the 20th century. First opened in 1906, North Division High School has a C-minus on Niche and is known for its murals celebrating the arts, diversity and Black history. “The high school is a big draw for families in the area,” says Sonya Mays, a broker at Midwest Executive Realty. “People take a lot of pride in their time there.” The Milwaukee Parental Choice Program offers qualifying students partial or full tuition coverage for private schools in the area.Secret sauce at Speed Queen's Bar-B-Q
Locally-owned and operated shops and restaurants are common features that unite the neighborhood. Celebrated for its quick service and secret sauce, Speed Queen Bar-B-Q has been a local institution since 1956. A laid-back atmosphere and drive-through window open until 2 a.m. keeps locals coming — just remember to bring cash. The Galst Food Market is along the neighborhood's southern border, and The Avenue features three levels of shopping and restaurants 2-and-a-half miles southeast.Flowers in bloom at Ezekiel Gillespie Park
America's Black Holocaust Museum is a handful of blocks east of the neighborhood on North Avenue and explores the history of enslaved people in America. Seven galleries capture the transition from life in Africa before enslavement to life today. A membership to the Northside YMCA gives access to indoor basketball courts, group exercise programs and a gymnasium. Kids can climb on the play set at Franklin Square Playground, which also features basketball courts and a splash pad during the summer. Ezekiel Gillespie Park is named for the civil rights leader and is known for its garden, complete with colorful flowerbeds and fruit trees.Easy access to Aurora Sinai
The Milwaukee County Transit System offers public bus lines throughout the city, with several neighborhood stops, including Teutonia Avenue, North 8th Street and Center Street. Interstate 43 provides easy access to downtown and Aurora Sinai Medical Center, less than 2 miles south. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 9 miles south via Interstate 94.Learn football from the pros
The North Division Community Center hosts many annual events, including the Gilbert Brown Football Camp, where kids ages 8 to 17 can learn to play the game with professional players. North Division High School is home to the Blue Devils basketball, football and tennis teams, attracting alums and sports fans to year-round competitions.Crime
