Old North Milwaukee
Bungalows and Tudor Revival-style homes
“Multiple train routes once ran through the neighborhood's center, causing noise issues for residents. But, according to Realtor Sandy Ertel, who sells homes in Old North Milwaukee with RE/MAX Lakeside, only one of those tracks is still active. Streets in the neighborhood are lined with trees and sidewalks, and some backyards are fenced in. Most homes, however, do not have a garage. The northern section of the neighborhood has early 20th-century bungalows, the most common architectural style found in Old North Milwaukee. These often feature brick bases, small, covered porches and jerkinhead roofs in the classic Milwaukee style. There are various Tudor Revival-style houses throughout the neighborhood as well. Homes here sell for around half of Milwaukee's median home price. Houses start at $40,000 and can go up to $230,000. "A lot of the older houses don't even require renovations.”Smith Park and Lincoln Park
Several outdoor recreation spots are in and around Old North Milwaukee, including Smith Park. Within walking distance of many homes, this 19-acre green space features a multi-use field (including a baseball backstop), winding walking paths and a wading pool. There's also the newly renovated Custer Playfield, which offers a basketball court and a large playground. The paved Oak Leaf Trail connects residents to Lincoln Park. The sprawling green space is bisected by the Milwaukee River and includes a pool, a golf course, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, miles of trails and canoe launches. If it's a rainy day, the newly constructed Villard Square Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library is on the north side of the neighborhood. The library provides desktop and laptop computers, study rooms, children's and teen study areas and self-checkout stations. One of Milwaukee's top five AP schools
Because of Milwaukee's school choice policy, parents apply to send their children to schools throughout the city. On West Hope Avenue, the Samuel Clemens School serves elementary students and has a C-minus rating from Niche. Less than 5 miles south of the neighborhood, Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts has a D-minus rating. The public magnet school offers its students the chance to shadow master artists. Riverside University High School is one of the top five Advanced Placement schools in the Milwaukee Public School district and has a C-plus from Niche.Eggs at Jo's Cafe and drinks at Oasis
For groceries, the neighborhood has several bodega-style options, like Fresh Market Pantry on Villard Avenue and the family-owned Hopkins Food Store on Hopkins Street. An Aldi is on the neighborhood's west side. Old North Milwaukee is known for its pop-up dining spots— from neon-lit lounges with live music to downhome dives. Along West Silver Spring Drive, Jo's Cafe is a classic American wood-furnished restaurant where residents can see their bacon and eggs sizzling on the grill. Across the street, the Chicken & Grill House serves its fried dishes in Styrofoam boxes so patrons can eat on the go. Hip-hop beats and mixed drinks flow at Oasis, a low-lit nightlife spot on West Villard Avenue.Quasimodo Physical Theatre and Vibes on Villard
The neighborhood offers multiple entertainment opportunities each year. Just off North 35th Street, Quasimodo Physical Theatre hosts plays and other performance art events that are performed and written by Milwaukee locals. In the summer, the Villard Avenue Business Improvement District hosts the Vibes on Villard outdoor concert series at the intersection of 35th and Villard. The city shuts down the streets so that residents can enjoy live musical performances as well as local food and merchandise vendors. The Institute for the Preservation of African-American Music and Arts is located just off Hampton Avenue. The institute hosts educational programming, exhibits artwork and showcases the performances of local artists.Getting around Milwaukee
