A small pocket of Milwaukee with big appeal
Saveland Park is a small swath of Milwaukee, situated in the shadow of the more well-known Bay View neighborhood. Saveland Park is so compact it’s been referred to as Milwaukee’s hidden neighborhood. Yet Saveland Park’s location by Bay View means residents here can benefit from a lot of the same appeals that make Bay View one of Milwaukee’s most sought-after neighborhoods, all with a lighter hit on the wallet — from quick park access to convenient proximity to Milwaukee’s downtown. “I think when you’re adjacent to a neighborhood it means that you’re going to get a good value,” says local Realtor William Lauer, owner of the William Lauer Group.

Mostly residential makeup helps give Saveland Park its character
The Saveland Park area sprouted significantly in the post-World War II era. Thus, much of the existing housing stock here dates back to the mid-20th century, a mix of mostly Cape Cods, Tudors and ranch-style homes. Houses in Saveland Park are organized neatly along a rectangular grid of residential streets, and most come with at least a bit of lawn space on lots of around one-tenth of an acre. Homes here feature floor plans that stretch an average of 1,140 square feet. Price tags in Saveland Park usually range from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$300,000s. Sidewalks line all of Saveland Park’s streets, where neighbors get to know each other through strolls around the neighborhood, often with their dogs.

Proximity is peak in Saveland Park
This neighborhood is filled almost entirely with homes, eschewing commercial amenities for the most part. Still, those who live in Saveland Park are close to a lot. For instance, locals can stop in for a drink and pizza at Dale Z.'s On Tour, a sports bar on nearby Howell Avenue. Locals can keep going up Howell to stop at Sabrosa Cafe & Gallery, which proclaims itself to be Milwaukee’s best restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Cinnamon rolls are one of Sabrosa’s specialties.
People who live in Saveland Park can also take advantage of the Pick ’n Save and Piggly Wiggly just north of the neighborhood, just off Chase Avenue. And, just like those in Bay View, Saveland residents benefit from being just about half a dozen miles away from Milwaukee’s downtown, where there are plenty more amenities to enjoy.

Garden District gives multiple events to enjoy
Saveland Park is part of what’s known as the larger Garden District in Milwaukee, and the Garden District Farmers Market is held on Saturdays here from June to October just outside of Saveland Park on 6th Street. People in the neighborhood can also hop downtown to 75-acre Henry Maier Festival Park, where there’s a packed calendar of events that help give Milwaukee the nickname of the “City of Festivals.” “Every weekend through the summer they have a different festival,” says Lauer, a longtime Milwaukee resident. One of the highlights is Summerfest, which is held over nine days from late June to early July and boasts the distinction of “The World's Largest Music Festival.”
City permits school choice
The Milwaukee Public Schools system, which has a C overall grade on Niche, allows students and their families to submit their top three school choices rather than assigning solely based on address. But options conveniently close to those who live in Saveland Park include the C-rated Humboldt Park School. Humboldt Park School offers prekindergarten through eighth grade and a list of extracurricular activities that includes basketball, flag football, soccer, track and field, and volleyball teams. Parks come in abundance
One of the neighborhood's signature features is its namesake park. Saveland Park spans 3 acres and includes a playground and a pond. There are also walking paths, ideal for a leisurely stroll. Plus Saveland Park residents, like those who live in Bay View, are close to the bigger, 73-acre Humboldt Park. “They like Humboldt Park, which isn’t too far from the Saveland Park neighborhood,” Lauer says of people who live in this part of the city. “They have concerts on a weekly basis there, free concerts in the summer.” The summer concert series is dubbed Chill on the Hill, held on Tuesday evenings from June to August.
