Story Hill
Homes straight out of a storybook
Compact square yards, concrete walkways and streetlight-trimmed sidewalks set the scene for an eclectic mix of early 20th century homes. "A lot of them have fireplaces and beautiful woodwork and detailing," Jaworski says. "They're really quality homes with old-world charm." Large Tudors with brick, stone and plaster-and-timber facades line many of these streets. Midcentury Colonial Revivals and Dutch Colonials with steep gambrel roofs also appear in the neighborhood, along with rows of 1920s Craftsman bungalows, brick ramblers and Foursquares with Prairie-style influences. Tudors in Story Hill often carry the highest price tags at $450,000 to $500,000 for a five-bedroom home. Some of the neighborhood's bungalows can go for low $200,000, and most other options range from $300,000 to $415,000.Pregame bites on Blue Mound Road
The eateries on Blue Mound Road serve Story Hill locals and Brewers fans alike. Story Hill BKC is a classy restaurant, wine, beer and liquor shop rolled into one. Customers make a reservation to enjoy Upper Midwest-inspired dinner options like the Story Hill Steak or a weekend brunch complete with crepes, frittatas and brunch burgers. Casual spots include Kelly's Bleachers, J&B's and Dugout 54. By crossing Hawley Road, locals hit Tavo's Signature Cuisine, an award-winning New Mexican joint serving farm-to-table fare. As for groceries, folks shop the popular Metcalfe's Market on State Street or head next door to Metro Market or Outpost Natural Foods.Hitting the Brewers game
Story Hill residents call the Milwaukee Brewers their neighbors and can spend many evenings downing hot dogs, sipping local brews and watching their hometown heroes swing for the fences. Game day aside, the Story Hill Neighborhood Association hosts barbecues, egg hunts in the spring, and even live music to unite the community.Schools for Story Hill students
Story Hill students can choose from a plethora of specialized education options. They can get started at Hawley Environmental School, which earns a C-minus from Niche. This public elementary school helps kids become more attuned to the needs of their natural surroundings through time spent in the school garden and an extracurricular aquaponics program. Craig Montessori School and Fernwood Montessori School each serve kindergarten through eighth grade and earn a C-minus and C-plus, respectively. Woodlands School, a charter school authorized by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, offers a character-driven curriculum for K through eighth and earns a B-plus from Niche. Golda Meir School serves gifted third through 12th graders and earns an A-minus, while Milwaukee High School of the Arts earns a C-plus.Walking to Doyne Park and Mitchell Boulevard Park
Some residents live right up against Doyne Park. Though its amateur golf course is now closed for renovation, this 35-acre green space features basketball courts and soccer fields. Visitors can dip into the Menomonee River or jog along the Oak Leaf Trail. Mitchell Boulevard Park's 16 acres of open lawn and playground—not to mention "Tree of Life," a colorful steel sculpture by the late Wisconsin artist Nancy Metz White—sit a few blocks south. The park is a short walk from Calvary Cemetery, where several Milwaukee historical figures are buried.Quick commutes to major Milwaukee employers
Besides Brewer's games and the park, locals drive to get to most destinations in their city. With Interstate 94 running through Story Hill and interchanges with State Trunk Highway 175 nearby, residents can easily commute to work in or outside the city. By heading directly east, residents reach the manufacturing plants, offices and museums in Menomonee Valley or arrive in downtown Milwaukee in about 4.5 miles. They can take I-94 almost the whole 12-mile trip to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. Specialized healthcare providers are also nearby, with Milwaukee Campus-Children's Wisconsin 3 miles away and the main branch of the Clement J Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center directly south of American Family Field.
Landfill history and game day noise
Doyne Park was developed over a landfill presumed to be active as early as the 1940s. In response to safety concerns, the city installed a landfill gas control system around the park's perimeter in the late '90s.Homebuyer hopefuls should know that noise from cheering fans can float to residential areas, along with traffic from the two major highways.
