A creative hub in Northeast Minneapolis
In Bottineau, simple architecture meets creative quirk along the Mississippi River. This once factory-rich area has evolved into industrial art studios, unique boutiques and longstanding restaurants, creating a densely populated neighborhood within the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. “Because it’s so close to the city and is the epicenter of the arts district, a lot of new and trendy restaurants have moved in. It’s really been a happenin’ neighborhood for many years,” says Jim Dropps, Realtor and broker/owner of Northeast Real Estate Group, who’s been in business in the area since 2011. Buyers here face a competitive market, with prices ranging from $210,000 for turn-of-the-century homes in need of some renovation, to greater than $630,000 for new construction.

Vintage finds and good eats around California Street
Bottineau is a “shop local” kind of neighborhood, featuring shops and artists you won’t find elsewhere in the city. The fairytale-like cottage on California Street, Antiquified Antiques and Collectibles, is overflowing with treasures from every decade. Coffee and art intertwine at Mojo Coffee Gallery, a relaxed café with paintings and pieces covering every inch of the walls, and a selection of hand-thrown pottery for sale. For the foodies, Jax Café is an area landmark established in 1933, plating premium cuts and fresh seafood in an old-school dining space and garden patio. “It’s the old standby supper club— think classic steaks, prime ribs, chops, and the space is beautiful,” says Dropps, who’s lived in Minneapolis for 24 years. Just south of the neighborhood is Sentyrz Market, the self-proclaimed “biggest little store in town” that’s the only supermarket in the state with a liquor license.

Experience it all during Art-A-Whirl
The neighborhood’s many artists take center stage during Art-A-Whirl, every third weekend in May. The free event, considered the largest open studio tour in the country, features nearly 1,000 artists and businesses across 60 locations. Tens of thousands of visitors descend on the arts district to see installations and demonstrations, tour studios and more. Bottineau’s California Building, an industrial space transformed in the 1990s into more than 80 artist workspaces, is an annual participant.

Variety of turn-of-the-century homes
Along the gridded streets here are mostly single-family homes built in the early 20th century with some duplexes and apartment buildings peppered in. With varying styles, each home looks different from the next: two-story homes with stone or stucco siding sit beside pastel bungalows and contemporary ranch-style homes. Dropps says buyers should prepare for competition as inventory is low in this desirable area. “There’s high demand, so you’re seeing values go up. The neighborhood is within 5 minutes of downtown, and you can have a house with a nice yard on sidewalk-lined streets with trees and be able to walk to coffee shops and art galleries,” Dropps says. Most homes are priced between $300,000 to $500,000 but can go as low as $210,000 or top $700,000.
