Historic housing and a happening culinary scene in this riverside community
The community of Cooper in east Minneapolis contours the Mississippi River and provides residents with historic single-family homes lining tightly gridded streets. “It’s a nice little neighborhood," explains Realtor Michael Kootsikas, who has nearly 10 years of experience selling in the Twin Cities. “People go to the riverfront to jog or relax and hang out — that’s the main draw for a lot of people." Another reason for Cooper's popularity? Its proximity to Minneapolis and St. Paul, both of which are only 5- and 7-miles away, respectively. “A lot of households have split jobs," adds Kootsikas, meaning "one family member works in St. Paul and another is in Minneapolis," with Cooper being an equidistant option right in the middle. Lake Street anchors the culinary scene in Cooper, offering an eclectic mix of local restaurants. Or for a wider array of options, residents can cross over the Mississippi River Bridge to head into St. Paul.
Lake Street serves every cuisine
“Lake Street runs through Cooper, and it’s all restaurants,” Kootsikas says. “It’s a busier road that will take you across the river to St. Paul.” From Highway 55 to the Mississippi, Lake Street is lined with local restaurants serving cuisines from across the globe. Resident favorites include Himalayan Restaurant, which serves Nepalese dishes like goat curry and palak paneer; Sonora Grill, where house margaritas are best sipped on the patio; and Merlins Rest Pub, an old-school British bar with an extensive whiskey list and live music most nights. Hi-Lo Diner attracts patrons with its shiny 1950s exterior and keeps them coming back with their homemade donuts and ice cream cocktails, and Longfellow Grill’s riverside patio makes it a favored spot to grab a happy hour drink after work. When it’s time to run errands, locals stock up on essentials at Minnehaha Center, which houses retailers like Target, Sally Beauty and Dollar Tree, and nearby, they grab groceries at Cub Foods or ALDI.

Bike to both downtowns
Cooper is located on the east side of Minneapolis, about five miles from downtown Minneapolis and seven from downtown St. Paul, and it’s about a 10- to 15-minute drive to get to either. The Metro Transit bus gets residents either way in about 40 to 45 minutes. To get to downtown Minneapolis, residents can bike the West River Parkway for five miles or bike along Marshall Avenue for six miles to get to downtown St. Paul. Cooper is considered somewhat walkable on Walk Score, meaning it’s possible to accomplish some errands on foot, and it earned the title of “Biker’s Paradise” with a 96/100 Bike Score. The closest hospital, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, is three miles from the neighborhood, and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is about six miles away.

Residents can try their hand at ceramics or show up for open ping-pong, volleyball, softball or ultimate frisbee. On select nights throughout the summer, residents bring their picnic blankets to Brackett Recreation Center for family-friendly movies in the park.

Explore the river from White Sands Beach
“Despite our terrible winters, this is a very active city for outdoor amenities,” says Realtor Dan Schneider, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for 12 years. Residents can explore White Sands Beach, a quiet spot along the riverfront perfect for enjoying a moment of peace. It’s a short hike down to the beach, where trees over the river are fit for kids and the young at heart to climb. Those interested in wildlife should keep an eye out — turkey vultures, peregrine falcons and eagles have been spotted here. Nearby, Brackett Park has a playground, softball fields and a skatepark, and Longfellow Park has a tennis court, ice rink and wading pool.

Well-maintained early 20th-century housing
“This neighborhood is pretty packed with houses, and they’re on small lots, but they are very well-kept,” Schneider says. “It’s basically all single-family homes, and the vast majority are over 100 years old now,” Kootsikas says. The neighborhood’s historic housing includes bungalows and American Foursquares featuring unique architectural characteristics like sunrooms, screened-in porches and steeply pitched roofs. Residents like that each home has its own charm and that the owners before them took such good care of them. The lots are small but large enough for residents to enjoy their space by setting up a garden or outdoor seating area. Both riverside and close to downtown, this neighborhood continues to increase in desirability. “Prices have gone up year over year. The market is strong, and buyers are trying to get in,” Kootsikas says. “There are a lot of what would be considered entry-level houses, but that doesn’t mean they’re cheap,” Schneider says. Prices start in the $200,000s for a two- or three-bedroom bungalow and increase with size and proximity to the river. “Closer to the river is where the pricier properties are located,” Kootsikas says. On the neighborhood’s riverfront, prices can reach $600,000.
