Downtown West mixes business with restaurants, theaters and sports

Downtown West is the main business district of Minneapolis, and several large companies are headquartered there. Residents live in condos with a wide range of sizes, styles and prices. People can easily use the Minneapolis Skyway System to walk to the neighborhood’s many restaurants, bars and theaters, or they can hop on Metro Transit buses and light rails.

What people can expect to pay for standard and luxury condos

People in Downtown West mostly live in condos that were added over time, from the 1960s to the 2000s. Prices vary greatly with location, size, amenities and age, from about $65,000 for a small, simple space to the mid-$800,000s for larger units in more modern buildings. HOA fees typically go from $500 to $1,000 per month. Luxury condos in complexes like The Carlyle and The Whitney Landmark Residences can have views of the Mississippi River or the city skyline, and usually run from about $1 million to roughly $4.5 million, with HOA fees between $1,300 and $5,700 per month. Around 75% of the area’s residents are renters who live in apartments found throughout the neighborhood.

Employees of downtown companies can walk to work

Downtown West is one of the city’s central commercial districts, along with North Loop and Downtown East. Of the three, Downtown West is the most business-focused, home to large companies like Target, U.S. Bank and Sleep Number. “It’s the hub that spins the wheel of the state,” says Barbara Brin, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty – Minnesota Lakes who lives downtown. But the area is far from all-work, no-play. People tend to walk where they need to go, and almost every street has a popular restaurant, bar or arts venue to check out. The area’s residents tend to be active, taking full advantage of what the neighborhood offers even in less-than-stellar weather. The city is known for quickly clearing snow from the streets, keeping commuters as safe as possible. All of the area’s activity can lead to noise, especially near Hennepin Avenue’s restaurants and theaters.

Residents can often catch a ballgame or see a concert

There’s no shortage of cultural attractions in and around the neighborhood, and it's easy to walk to most of them. Places to check out include:

  • The Minnesota Orchestra, which hosts concerts most weekends
  • Target Center, the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx basketball teams
  • First Avenue, a rock music venue made famous by Prince
  • Target Field, where the Minnesota Twins baseball team plays
  • The Orpheum Theatre, a venue for musicals and stand-up comedy that opened in 1921

There's room for buzzy restaurants and several bars

Downtown West is one of the city’s nightlife hotspots. Two restaurants are connected to the James Beard Foundation Awards: 112 Eatery, a New American restaurant from award-winning chef Isaac Becker; and Owamni, which won an award for its Indigenous cuisine. It's run by chef Sean Sherman, better known as the Sioux Chef. People looking for beers and comfort food can visit The Local, a traditional Irish pub. Tom’s Watch Bar is the city’s largest sports bar, with more than 100 TVs and long beer and cocktail menus. The morning after a night out, you can head to Hen House Eatery, an all-day breakfast spot. There are also a few upscale chain restaurants like Fogo de Chão.

The Minneapolis Skyway System keeps people warm

Brin says many people live downtown so they can walk to work, even during below-freezing temperatures. The Minneapolis Skyway System of indoor bridges links around 80 city blocks together, totaling roughly 10 miles. Some condos have direct access to the Skyway, so residents don’t have to step outside. “If you’re in the [downtown] core, you take the Skyway in the winter, and in summer you enjoy the weather,” Brin says. For longer commutes, residents can drive, bike or take Metro Transit buses, which make stops throughout the neighborhood. Metro Transit also operates a light rail system that runs across downtown to destinations like the University of Minnesota and the Mall of America. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is about a 15- to 25-minute drive, or a 30-minute light rail ride.

Nicollet is a car-free part of town

One of the neighborhood's most famous districts is Nicollet, formerly Nicollet Mall, a strip where only buses and taxis are allowed. The lack of cars gives people the freedom to walk and check out Nicollet's businesses. Target’s flagship store is there, and so is Uniquely Global boutique. The strip also hosts events like Downtown Thursdays, when food trucks, family-friendly games and live performances take over.

Families often look at alternative schools

Students are zoned for the Minneapolis Public School District, but residents here often look at alternatives. The state’s open enrollment policy means students can attend any school outside of their district with an open spot. The FAIR School for Arts, a citywide magnet school, is in the neighborhood and uses a lottery system for enrollment. One private option is the City of Lakes Waldorf School, a highly rated private school for kindergarten through eighth grade. It’s around a mile and a half away.
