North Loop is known for food and convenience

North Loop is a buzzing section of Minneapolis located next to downtown. Residents can walk from their condos and apartments to the neighborhood’s trendy dining district for a night out. Other attractions, like Target Field, are just as close, and the city’s business district isn’t much farther. Bikes, as well as Metro Transit buses and light rails, give people more ways to get around the area.

What buyers often pay for condos and townhomes

The neighborhood is full of condos that were converted from old warehouses, so they often have exposed brick and concrete. There are a few more modern condos as well. Prices often range from the mid-$200,000s for a standard space to the upper $900,000s for a more deluxe option, with select units selling for more than $1.3 million. HOA fees can run from $450 to $1,500 per month. There are a handful of townhomes that commonly sell between the lower $800,000s and around $1.5 million. Houses closer to the Mississippi River tend to be more expensive. Homeowners are outnumbered by renters, who make up nearly 75% of residents; renters usually occupy one-bedroom condos and apartments, though there are a few two- and three-bedroom units as well. The community is typically more expensive than surrounding neighborhoods like Downtown West and Sumner-Glenwood.

North Loop has some of the city's top restaurants

The neighborhood is known as a hot spot for trendy restaurants. Some of the area’s in-demand eateries include:

  • Bar La Grassa, a longstanding Italian spot
  • Butcher & The Boar, which serves smoked meats and drinks from an extensive list of specialty cocktails, spirits and wines
  • Graze Food Hall, home to several vendors that serve food from across the globe
  • Smack Shack, known for its lobster boils and other seafood dishes
  • Spoon and Stable, an upscale restaurant inside a former horse stable
The fun doesn’t have to end with dinner: Nightlife spots like Parlour have craft cocktails, while Bunker’s Music Bar & Grill often hosts live concerts.

The area has grown, but still has a sense of community

Most of the area’s housing and commercial buildings are to the northeast, including the historic Warehouse District. Outside of that section, the rest of the neighborhood is more industrial, though there are a few spots that people seek out, including the Minneapolis Farmers Market, which is open most Saturdays, even in winter. Freight railroads cut through the neighborhood, passing under North Washington Avenue, but because the area is already noisy, any impact from passing trains is minimal.

Janelle Murlowski, a Realtor with P.S. Real Estate LLC who used to live in the neighborhood, says things are different in North Loop than they used to be. “It has really grown up,” Murlowski says. “It’s now where everyone wants to be. … The river is right there, but you can walk to the business district. You can work and play from the same spot.” Though the area has become more popular, it still feels like a small community. The North Loop Neighborhood Association promotes neighborhood gatherings like dog-friendly shopping days, sports watch parties and an annual candy grab for kids.

Getting around Minneapolis is easy

Downtown West’s business district is roughly a mile from the area. Metro Transit buses can get there in around 15 minutes. Riding the Metro Transit light rail is another option. Blue and Green Line trains that leave from the Target Field station reach the business district in about 5 minutes. Driving is also an option, and Murlowski says getting in and out of the neighborhood is a breeze. “Interstate 394’s ramp is in North Loop,” Murlowski says. “It took maybe 70 seconds to get on it [from my house].” Drivers need to be aware that street parking can be tough to find. Murlowski says the city does a good job of clearing main roads like North Washington Avenue after snowstorms.

Residents root on the Minnesota Twins and take in live performances

The Minnesota Twins baseball team plays at North Loop's Target Field. The neighborhood gets more crowded than usual on gamedays, and parking can be more of a challenge. Toward the river, the Luminary Arts Center hosts live music, dance and theater performances. Murlowski says The Acme Comedy Company brings well-known stand-up comedians to town, often for multi-night runs.

Grocery and clothes shopping can be done nearby

Residents will have to leave North Loop in order to run most errands. There are two nearby grocery stores: Whole Foods Market, which many people can easily walk to, and Lunds & Byerlys, which is about a mile away from the Warehouse District. Clothing stores like Lululemon and MartinPatrick 3 are in the area. For everything else, people can make the trip to Nicollet, a Downtown West commercial district where only buses and taxis are allowed on the road.

There are parks and trails along the Mississippi River

Residents often head to the area’s green spaces for workouts or to relax. North Loop Dog Park gives furry friends a place to run free, and walking paths along the Mississippi River offer great views. Across the river, Boom Island Park has bike trails and a boat dock, plus a signature lighthouse.
