Community-focused neighborhood near downtown Minneapolis
Whittier is tucked along Interstate 35W near the junction with I-94, a mile south of downtown Minneapolis. Covering 81 square blocks, this large, dense and diverse community is known as “The International Neighborhood.” It’s home to the stretch of Nicollet Avenue called Eat Street, a multicultural blend of must-try restaurants. But the culinary arts aren’t the only thing celebrated here. “Whittier is a thriving neighborhood where people value community and community engagement. People are committed to showing up for their neighbors,” says Willow Kreibich, a communication and administration associate with community nonprofit the Whittier Alliance. Buyers will find homes in various styles such as Victorian and Italianate. Prices range from $150,000 to $900,000.

Travel by tastebuds along Eat Street
Community and culture are at the center of shopping in Whittier. Residents can grab groceries at the volunteer-run Good Grocer or peruse the stalls at Karmel Mall, the country's first and largest Somali shopping center. Dining is done along Nicollet Avenue, recognized as Eat Street. From Mexican taquitos to Taiwanese steamed buns, sampling your way through all its offerings would be an impressive feat. “That’s the glory of Eat Street. There’s something for everyone whether it's McDonalds or Vietnamese food or bar food,” says Kreibich, a 13-year resident of the neighborhood. Pimento Jamaican Kitchen & Rum Bar is known for its jerk chicken, plantains and other classic Jamaican cuisine. At family-owned Quang Restaurant, pho, bubble tea and banh mi attract hungry visitors from around the Minneapolis metro area. Glam Doll Donuts offers unique flavors of their sweet treats in a retro diner, complete with a photo booth.

Picturesque and Classical homes shaded by trees
While there are mostly renters living in apartments in Whittier, people looking to plant roots or invest here can find ornate Victorian, Foursquare, and Italianate styles built in the 1800s or early 1900s, many with detached garages accessed by alleyways or private driveways. Homes sit on medium-sized lots, with manicured yards, setback from the broad streets lined with tall spruce and oak trees. Many have been converted into duplexes, triplexes, and condos, but row and detached single-family homes can still be found throughout the community. With the range in layouts, home prices can be as low as $150,000 but top more than $900,000. Some condos may come with monthly community fees of around $300.
