Quiet neighborhood on the edge of Montana wilderness
Tucked away in a narrow canyon in Missoula's North Hills, Grant Creek allows homeowners to immerse themselves in wilderness while just minutes from town. "People like to live here because of the setting," says Stacy Rye, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Montana Properties who has sold homes in the neighborhood. "I was showing a house out here last year up against the hill, and there was a little baby black bear. I didn't want to see where its momma was." Other than the wildlife, the neighborhood has multiple subdivisions, allowing buyers to choose a more neighborly setting or one where they can have more privacy. Grant Creek Road connects to Reserve Street south of the neighborhood, offering easy access to one of Missoula's main commercial corridors.
Exploring Missoula's North Hills on local trails
With nature being a primary draw to the neighborhood, there are several ways for residents to enjoy the outdoors. The Grant Creek Trail is a paved walking and biking trail that weaves through wooded areas next to the namesake creek before moving into open grasslands. On any given day, dozens of people use the trail to exercise or de-stress at the end of the workday. Bikers and hikers should know that the trail can be challenging as it climbs the hills the further north it goes. "We rode our bikes up here when they first built it and it was July, the first day that year that it was like 93 degrees," Rye says. "We spent an hour going up this hill and then came down in 15 minutes." The Bluebird Preserve is in the neighborhood's south end, just off Grant Creek Road. The city bought this 124-acre preserve in 2019 and opened it to the public in 2023, with miles of hiking trails. The natural area is notable as a habitat for Missoula Phlox, a species of wildflower that only lives in a narrow strip of the North Hills. Winter sports enthusiasts can visit Snowbowl, a ski area north of the neighborhood with multiple trails for all levels of skiers. The park is also open in the summer for mountain biking and ziplining.

Suburban and mountainside homes
Buyers in Grant Creek can find suburban, rural and condo homes. The Prospect subdivision features 1990s Craftsman houses on lots that are typically between a quarter acre and an acre. The subdivision has winding, hilly streets that offer expansive views of the neighborhood as they climb the hills. A mix of mature deciduous and pine trees dot the landscape, adding to the sense of nature. Homes at the bottom of the subdivision can cost between $650,000 and $900,000, while homes on top of the hill cost between $1 million and $1.8 million. Further north up Grant Creek Road, dense trees surround the homes, which include Craftsman, log cabins and ranch-style houses. Properties are close enough that neighbors can see each other, but the trees and hilly landscape offer more privacy than the Prospect area. These typically cost between $900,000 and $1.3 million. Condos at the neighborhood's south end cost between $300,000 and $350,000.
Pizza, beer and huckleberries at Grant Creek restaurants
Multiple nearby restaurants offer a range of culinary options in Grant Creek, including Highlander Beer. This local brewery is decked out with retro décor, including an old-school pickup truck perched above the bar. In addition to beer, the brewery offers pizza by the slice, each one named after a regional river. The brewery is best known for the Missouri, a cheeseburger pizza with mustard sauce. The Montana Club is a rustic steakhouse with a large stone fireplace and exposed beams on the ceiling. Part of a local chain with locations across the state, this restaurant is known for incorporating huckleberries into its dishes and drinks. Chain stores like Costco, Target and REI line Reserve Street south of the neighborhood. Groceries are available at the nearby Albertsons on Reserve Street.

Learning about elk habitats in the Montana hills
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a nonprofit organization in the neighborhood. Founded by elk hunters in 1984, the organization is dedicated to conserving land to protect elk habitats and promote hunting heritage throughout Montana and the rest of the country. The nonprofit acquires land for conservation and works with landowners on voluntary conservation agreements to ensure that elk herds have protected habitats and that hunters have healthy elk populations to hunt. Several locations in Missoula are protected by the REMF, including Mount Jumbo. Residents can learn more about the organization and the life of elk at the museum located in REMF headquarters.
One road in and out of the neighborhood
Grant Creek Road is the only route in and out of the residential part of the neighborhood. Due to its somewhat isolated location, the community has no public transit. The Grant Creek Trail connects to the road at the neighborhood's south end and could be used to bike or walk to destinations south of the neighborhood. Interstate 90 passes through the neighborhood's south end, offering a highway east or west throughout Montana. The closest hospital, Saint Patrick's is about 4 miles away in Missoula.
Fire risk in Grant Creek
Due to Grant Creek's location near the wilderness and little rainfall, there is an increased risk of wildfire. With Grant Creek Road being the only way out of the neighborhood, traffic could be an issue if the area needs to be evacuated, making it important for residents to be prepared and monitor any fire activity in the area. There is also a risk of flooding for properties adjacent to Grant Creek.
