A mix of suburban peace and city convenience
Roads ending in cul-de-sacs, shaded with tall oak trees covered in Spanish moss, aren't what one would expect for a neighborhood 8 miles from a city center. Berkleigh is that neighborhood filled with surprises at every turn. Proximity to the stores and restaurants along Airport Boulevard is a critical component of what makes the neighborhood tick. It's also a short drive from the University of South Alabama campus, Ascension Providence Hospital and Mobile Regional Airport, which provide ample jobs for locals. "A lot of parents buy houses in the neighborhoods around the university for their college-aged children to live in while attending the university," says longtime local Stephany Hernandez, Realtor and co-owner at the Hernandez Jones group of Wellhouse Real Estate West LLC. Approximately one-third of the neighborhood rents, but those who set their roots in Berkleigh can expect a suburban lifestyle with convenience and Southern charm.

Food trucks after working up an appetite
For a game of baseball, soccer or tennis, athletes head to Medal of Honor Park. The most extensive park in the area is also home to a massive playground, pavilion and splash pad. Dogs can run around in the enclosed area, and events occur regularly. According to Hernandez, "Food trucks are popular in the area, and they usually park outside of parks and businesses for the community to enjoy." More secluded exercise exists along the Glen Sebastian Nature Trail. Bordering the university to the north, the forest offers miles of hiking loops that lead to ponds and wooden bridges, offering lookouts to observe native species of birds and turtles.

Plazas at every intersection
Airport Boulevard leads to two of the most extensive shopping areas in Mobile, but two smaller plazas are in the neighborhood itself. Hillcrest Plaza is at the northwest end of the neighborhood, and Regency Square is at the northeast. Grocery stores are plentiful in the plazas and on the bordering roads, as are chain restaurants. Siam Thai Cuisine is the highest rated in town for a local bite after a day of shopping. Using locally sourced ingredients, the restaurant has an extensive menu of sushi, noodles and curry dishes. Those looking for a sweet treat can get their fix at Sugar Rush Donut Company with traditional glazed or raspberry-filled donuts or less traditional options like a Reese's donut.

A wide range of diversity and price
Though Berkleigh is small, it has surprisingly extensive architectural diversity. Like many Mobile neighborhoods, ranch-style homes with high-pitched roofs are common. The area also boasts petite bungalows, symmetric Colonial Revivals and farmhouse-inspired ramblers with wide porches. Ranging between $150,000 and $500,000, the houses all feature off-street parking on private driveways. While garages aren't the standard, ample yard space with enough room for an inground pool is. Only a few of the streets have sidewalks, but the cul-de-sac roads are great for an evening stroll once the intensity of the sun dies down. Those who would rather forgo maintaining a lawn can invest in a condo in the southern end that sits around $125,000.

Always something to do in Mobile
Berkleigh is only 10 miles from the action of downtown Mobile. "Most people don't know this, but Mobile is the birthplace of Mardis Gras. Businesses shut down for the festival and the whole city celebrates together," Hernandez notes. There is always something going on downtown, and residents can get there via The Wave buses along Airport and South University Boulevard. USA Health Providence Hospital and its surrounding medical complex is nearby, adding a bit of noise and traffic to the area. Mobile Regional Airport is 5 miles away.
The Mobile Regional Airport connects Berkleigh residents to a handful of major hubs.
Getting around town is a snap with the Wave public bus system.
