Farms, elbow room and the Mobile International Speedway
With its wide-open spaces, plant nurseries and farms, Irvington is the definition of country. But the neighborhood isn’t pastoral, not with the Mobile International Speedway and the Highway 90 Dragway smack in the middle of things. Irvington is country with a souped-up engine and an independent streak. “I live there and love the rural lifestyle, and a lot of my neighbors enjoy the freedoms from less regulation,” says Kimon Brown, a resident of the area and Realtor with Azalea Real Estate. “It’s an underserved area, the fire department is all volunteer and there is no local police, so you are relying on county sheriffs.” An unincorporated area 19 miles south of Mobile beside I-10, Irvington is largely farmland, and homes tend to sit on at least half an acre of land.
Wildlife is plentiful at the Muddy Creek Wetlands Management Area
The closest spot for a nature walk is six miles east at Muddy Creek Wetlands Management Area, where 200 acres of restored wetlands is a haven for wildlife. More than two miles of trails meander over boardwalks and pass longleaf pines, bald cypresses, magnolias and coastal grasses. The wetlands are a stop on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, which also links to Bellingrath Gardens & House. A bird sanctuary, it hugs the Fowl River. And flower enthusiasts take note: there’s always something growing on its 65-acres of cultivated gardens. The gardens are ten miles east of Irvington. The white sand beaches and gorgeous sunsets of Dauphin Island are 25 miles south.

Ranch-style homes in Irvington range from $130,500 to $349,000 for newer, large brick builds. The majority of the houses are tucked at the end of long driveways off winding two-lane roads. Many homes are located on expansive lots with large yards that work well for pets. There are a mix of old and new subdivisions in Irvington, says Jennifer Tillman, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices who has lived in the region since 1982. Tillman recently helped a couple looking for a home in the Mobile area. “They wanted something that was a little secluded with a little bit of land with no restrictions or HOA type things,” said Tillman, “so we found something in Irvington that fits their needs perfectly.” Sidewalks, streetlights and other city amenities are rare in Irvington, contributing to its country vibe.

Cars go fast at the Mobile International Speedway
The green flag drops at 7:30 p.m. every Saturday night for the stock car races at Mobile International Speedway, the biggest thing going in these parts for miles around. Except maybe the drag races next door at the US 90 Dragway. Here, fans are advised to buckle up for the show, which is two hot rods blasting straight down the dragway to the finish line. During the Christmas holiday season, the Christmas Nights in Lights celebration transforms the track into an immersive light show attraction, with cars cruising past the lights while Christmas songs fa-la-la in the background.
It's easy to consider the nature of time at Time to Eat Cafe
With dozens of clocks hanging on its walls, kitschy Time to Eat Café leans into its name. The menu even has 12 burgers, one for every hour of the day. The 5 O’clock is layered with bacon and American cheese. Old fishing nets hang from the ceiling at DJ’s Diner, a no-fuss local joint serving sandwiches, onion rings and specialty ice cream. There are no large supermarkets in Irvington, but there are several options nearby. Palmer’s Grocery Store is a small market a few miles west in St. Elmo. Palmer’s sells household necessities and has an extensive beer and wine section. Winn-Dixie and Walmart Marketplace border I-10 in Theodore about five miles north. More retail options are available just over the Mississippi border in Pascagoula, which is 25 miles west via I-10.
