Ranch-style homes strut their stuff in Overlook
Ranch-style homes here have some fun, catching the eye with their striking shapes and styles. Some exude mid-century cool while others whisper Greek-Revival with their stately columns. Many homes have side-gabled roofs with small, covered porches, which all lend the rows of houses a tidy uniformity. Other styles include brick Colonials and split-levels. Trees are abundant, and inviting sidewalks enhance the community vibe in a few Overlook subdivisions. Prices range from $141,000 for a four-bedroom ranch-style house in need of TLC to $313,000 for a four-bedroom renovated rancher in Alpine Park. Other neighborhood subdivisions include Alpine Hills and Ridgewood Acres.Langan Park is home to hiking trails and a lake
The Glenn Sebastian Nature Trail winds through 95-acres of long needle pine and oak woodlands on the grounds of the University of Southern Alabama just south of Overlook. Raised boardwalks navigate the trail's scenic trees and lakes. Another green space, Langan Park, is just east of campus. “Langan Park is a park with walking trails and an amphitheater,” says Steve Hickman, Realtor with Keller-Williams Mobile and longtime Mobile local. Municipal Park, which is attached to Langan, has baseball and football fields. “Across another street is the Japanese gardens, and they have huge koi ponds and walking trails.” The nearby Mobile Tennis Center, home to 60 state-of-the-art lighted hard courts, hosts various leagues and clinics.Clark-Shaw Magnet Middle School is an award-winner
Students in Overlook attend Will Elementary, Scarborough Middle and Blount High. All three schools earn a grade of C- from Niche. The Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama runs an afterschool program for students from Will Elementary. The program offers educational activities and field trips. Like other high schools in Mobile County, Blount has several themed academies that direct the student curriculum. The signature academy at Blount is health science. The neighborhood is also home to Clark-Shaw Magnet Middle School, a two-time recipient of the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award.Market in the Park runs from May through early July
Plump blueberries, shiny peppers and ruddy potatoes brighten Cathedral Square in downtown Mobile on Saturdays during Market in the Park. In addition to produce, vendors sell fresh bread and homemade soaps and candles. Different city parks, including Langan, host Movies in the Park on Thursday nights in spring and fall. Blankets, chairs and coolers are welcome at this free event.Wave Transit buses stop at the University of South Alabama
Overlook is nine miles west of downtown Mobile. Mobile International Airport is 12 miles south. WAVE transit bus routes 4 and 18 stop at the University of South Alabama. Although some of the subdivisions may be walkable, a car is the best option for day-to-day life and commuting.Via Emilia earns kudos for its Northern Italian fare
One of the area’s most popular restaurants is Via Emilia, which specializes in Northern Italian cuisine. Perusing the extensive wine list in the piano bar makes a fine start to the evening at this mainstay, where dishes like eggplant Emilia and lamb Florentine are made from scratch daily with locally sourced ingredients. And coffee? It's a short drive to good java. “The local college, USA, is probably 15 minutes away,” says Waylon Bailey, general manager at Soul Caffeine in Midtown. “We have a lot of college students and professors come in and do work.” Soul Caffeine also serves breakfast and lunch. Walmart Neighborhood Market is convenient to the neighborhood.
