Tucked away along the edges of Mobile, the Pinewood neighborhood is a quiet residential haven easily accessible to the rest of the city.

Homes in the area are a lovely mixture of Tudors, midcentury styles, cottages, and ranch houses. Custom dwellings are scattered throughout the community, and the entire neighborhood resides in lush woodland. Crepe myrtles line many streets where houses are set away from the curb, allowing them to have small, tidy front lawns. The winding streets call out for evening strolls and the close proximity of houses encourage you to know your neighbors. Houses range from $150,000 to $365,000.

Parks are dotted throughout Mobile and Pinewood is home to Miller Park. Built in 1998, the green space contains tennis courts, gym, pool, and softball field with concessions. There’s also a playground for children and open spaces for games of soccer or kite flying.

Pinewood also has the Magnolia Grove Golf Course, a part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Guests can play 54 holes of golf here on two renovated championship courses. Each hole is surrounded by hardwood and pine forest, and creeks, marshland, and lakes run throughout the greens.

At Magnolia Grove, you’ll find the crossings, falls, and short courses. The crossings course is parkland like with mini–Verde Ultra dwarf greens while the falls course features large, contoured landscapes and cloverleaf bunkers. The short course has been named the best par-three course in the nation by Golf Digest and has Ultra dwarf Bermuda grass. All three use the natural topography of the Gulf Coast to its best advantage and tee markers are pegged to ability level, not age or gender.

Just south of Pinewood, you’ll find the Prestige Event and Entertainment Center, home to events from all along the Gulf Coast. The West Mobile facility hosts comedy shows, concerts, live theater, cabarets, balls, and weddings. Able to hold more than 1,000 guests, the spacious, multi-level building has industrial architecture and a high energy atmosphere. This unique multipurpose entertainment complex is close to the airport, the University of South Alabama campus, and the RTJ golf trail. It’s also easily accessible to restaurants and bars.

Because Pinewood is primarily residential, there aren’t any eateries in the neighborhood. However, just a few minutes south, you’ll find numerous dining options including Mugshots Grill and Bar. Started by two friends working together in Hawaii, they returned home to Hattiesburg in 2004 and have since made Mugshots into a regional chain. The grill has a sporty vibe, and the walls are covered with photos of visitors. It has a daily happy hour, and menu items, like Cliff’s Comeback Burger, were named for the owner’s friends and family.

Not far away, Wintzell’s Oyster House has been serving the community for over 80 years. This historic landmark began as a small six stool oyster bar serving fresh Gulf seafood. Quotes from the founder line the walls, and it supports the community through 12 different charities. Try the chargrilled oysters or low country boil for a taste of the sea.

Part of the Mobile County Public Schools district, Pinewood is home to Orchard Elementary School, which was founded in 1958 and has been serving the neighborhood from the same building since 1960.

Fifteen miles from Downtown Mobile, the Pinewood neighborhood offers easy access to the city while keeping a small, almost rural feel.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
