Secluded community at the base of a mountain
Located between Reno and the California border, Mogul is a bedroom community offering a small-town feel and laid-back lifestyle. Mogul was once a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Today, it’s a secluded area 6 miles west of Reno at the base of Peavine Peak. This small community on Interstate 80 lies between the high desert and the mountains, with incredible views of both. The area has a rural character, and it’s common to see horses and livestock on the hillsides. Outdoor activities are essential here, and residents often fly fish the Truckee River or hike the Tom Cooke Trail.
Hiking, biking and trails for both
Living in Mogul gives residents unlimited access to Northern Nevada’s outdoor fun. Mogul Park is located in the upper section of Mogul and offers stunning views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It has two children’s play areas, a sledding lawn and a fitness course. There are multi-use trails, courts for tennis and volleyball and horseshoe pits. Tom Cooke Trail lies just west of Reno and is part of the city’s urban trail system. The 4-mile path has steep, rocky portions and an open trail at the summit. Hunter Creek Trail is popular with visitors and locals. The well-marked 6-mile pathway ends at Hunter Creek Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the Reno area.
Mogul Park has excellent vista views along with playgrounds and recreation courts in Reno.
Mogul has an excellent Fall season where the aspens and oak trees light up in color.

New homes, established areas and great views
“Mogul is close to Reno, but has a very country feel to it. It’s near Truckee, and there’s trees and beautiful mountain views. People enjoy the extra room and bigger lots,” says Janet Oliver, a Realtor with Assist-2-Sell Buyers and Sellers with 15 years of experience. “Mogul borders Verdi and has a combination of new and established homes. Many are ranch-style houses with one or two stories. There’s very easy highway access, and it’s 10 minutes to Reno.” Primarily residential, Mogul has a nice mix of established housing alongside new construction. Depending on the area, houses may have rustic designs or even be made to look like log cabins. Other homes, often built at higher elevations for spectacular views, are more luxurious, with multiple stories and large lots. Some ranch-style houses are actual ranches and come with barns and stables. Front porches are common, and mature trees offer spots of shade. Prices range from $460,000 for a four-bedroom ranch-style home to $1 million for a three-bedroom estate house with unobstructed views.

Old school Italian, nostalgic American and a steampunk coffeeshop
Mogul doesn’t have any restaurants or retail, but luckily, plenty are nearby. Large retailers like Cabela’s are just down the road on Interstate 80, while eateries are found on Old Highway 40. Johnny’s Ristorante Italiano has been an enduring local favorite since 1966. The second-generation family-owned spot is known for its Osso Bucco and parmesan-crusted sole. The Original Mel’s Diner is located inside the Boomtown Casino Hotel and continues the nostalgia of the American diner, with 22 locations across Northern Nevada and California. Whispering Vine has a rotating selection of thousands of bottles, a full-service bar, small plates and a patio with views of the mountains and river. Coffeebar McCarran is located in the Monte Vista business park. The café features steampunk-inspired artwork, roll-up garage doors and patio seating.
One of the most iconic restaurants just outside of Mogul is Johnny's Italian off 4th Street.
