If kitschy, historic homes are your cup of tea, you might want to take a closer look at Montgomery's Highland Park. This neighborhood is steeped in architectural history, with a spoonful of that Southern hospitality Alabama is known for. Expect to find homes that date as far back as the 1900s, on streets surrounded by mature trees. "There are a lot of great investment properties here," says Amylynne Blake, a Realtor with Wallace and Moody Realty. "Highland Avenue especially has big, historic Queen Anne houses that are really cool."

Prairie-style homes with inviting front porches and craftsman cottages with triangular roofs and colonial-influenced white columns also characterize the area. With plenty of sidewalks, neighborhood strolls are a popular pastime. It's common for neighbors to walk around the block, greeting each other along the way.

Teenagers attend Dr. Percy L. Julian High School. Formally called Robert E. Lee High, the school changed its name in 2020 to that of the notable Black chemist. Home to the Generals, this school also serves Maxwell Air Force Base residents. The school has a fantastic athletics program with several alums going on to be professionals – at least ten former students went on to play for the NFL.

Younger children attend Highland Avenue Elementary School. The school benefits from having on-site social workers. Backpack programs send children home on Fridays with backpacks filled with food which they return empty the following Monday. The school also partners with Carastar Health to provide children with mental health services, should they ever need them. Another partner is Family Sunshine Center, which provides trauma counseling at the school for children who need it, so parents don't have to take time off their jobs. Highland Avenue Elementary takes care of its students' educational and emotional needs, to remove any barriers to future success.

Residents of Highland Park enjoy proximity to the beautiful Oak Park. This historic park has 40 acres of gorgeous gardens, playgrounds and a fish pond. Trails wind around the park, shaded by thick oak trees. It's a popular picnic spot with sheltered tables and a wi-fi hot spot.

If throwing horseshoes, picnicking or scenic walks aren't enough, the W.A. Gayle Planetarium is right next door. Since its opening in 1968, the planetarium has been exciting and educating science enthusiasts of all ages with its exhibits. Its Super Mediaglobe II is the world's first full-color single-lens digital planetarium. It projects simulations of information gathered across the universe. Visitors can take in simulations of stars, planets and constellations and imagine faraway worlds. The planetarium also projects the natural sky with simulated lightning, clouds, rain, snow and aurora projected on the ceiling. It is a must-see in the area.

Locals can raise their heart rate with a friendly game of tennis at O'Connor Tennis Center. The facility is open to the public, with $5 court fees. Lessons are also available to children ages 4 – 16, summer camps and high school tournaments.

Shopping gets done at Midtown Plaza, which offers familiar fast food brands such as Burger King and Popeyes, Ross Dress for Less, Walmart Supercenter, GameStop and more. American Deli is there, offering hot wings, cheesesteaks and other comfort foods. Yummy Yaki Mongolian Stir-Fry and Ramen is a local gem known for delicious bowls of ramen and other Asian staples.
KRU on Mt. Meigs is a tavern where patrons can enjoy a cocktail and dance to music spun by local DJs. The bar hosts events organized by Gravity, with frequent musical performances, poetry readings and art exhibitions.

Even though Highland Park is just walking distance from Montgomery's riverfront museums and restaurants, this neighborhood has plenty to offer right on its doorstep.
